About Francine Rivers

Francine Rivers is an American novelist best known for Christian historical and contemporary fiction built around faith, redemption, forgiveness, sacrifice, and people confronting the consequences of profoundly difficult choices. A New York Times bestselling author, she is especially associated with Redeeming Love and the Mark of the Lion trilogy, works that helped establish her as one of the most influential popular writers in modern inspirational fiction. Her career is unusual because it began successfully in the general romance market before undergoing a fundamental change in direction after her Christian conversion.

Rivers studied English, with an emphasis on literary writing, and journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. She began publishing in the 1970s during the growth of the historical romance market, writing several novels between 1976 and 1985. Those early books combined romance with Western, gothic, and historical elements and gave her an established commercial career before she stepped away from fiction for several years.

After becoming a born-again Christian in 1986, Rivers found that she could no longer write the kind of novels that had previously defined her career. Following an extended period away from fiction and intensive Bible study, she returned to writing with Redeeming Love. Inspired by the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer and relocated to California during the Gold Rush, the novel follows Angel, a woman forced into prostitution as a child, and Michael Hosea, whose commitment to loving her challenges everything she believes about relationships and her own worth.

Redeeming Love became the defining title of Rivers’s career and a landmark of Christian romance. Its combination of historical setting, explicit spiritual themes, trauma, romantic devotion, and redemption established the direction of much of her later work. The novel was eventually adapted into a feature film released in 2022.

Rivers expanded her historical fiction dramatically with the Mark of the Lion trilogy. Beginning with A Voice in the Wind, the series moves to the first-century Roman Empire and follows characters including the Christian slave Hadassah, Roman aristocrat Marcus Valerian, and Germanic warrior Atretes. The books use the decadence and violence of imperial Rome to explore persecution, faith under pressure, conversion, revenge, and the cost of living according to beliefs that conflict with the surrounding culture.

Biblical history also became central to the Lineage of Grace and Sons of Encouragement collections. Rather than retelling Scripture comprehensively, Rivers focuses on individual figures whose stories illuminate larger questions of obedience, failure, courage, and divine purpose. The Lineage of Grace novellas center on Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary, while Sons of Encouragement turns to Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, and Silas.

Her contemporary and more recent historical novels broaden those concerns. The Atonement Child confronts pregnancy, sexual violence, and moral conviction, while And the Shofar Blew examines ambition and spiritual failure within a church community. The Masterpiece returns strongly to romance through two damaged contemporary characters, whereas The Lady’s Mine revisits nineteenth-century California with a lighter Western setting and a heroine determined to challenge corruption.

Family across generations is particularly important in the Marta’s Legacy books, Her Mother’s Hope and Her Daughter’s Dream. The two novels trace several generations of women whose love for one another is repeatedly complicated by misunderstanding, ambition, resentment, and differing ideas about what sacrifice should look like.

Rivers has won multiple RITA Awards and was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame in 1997. She received the American Christian Fiction Writers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, and her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. Across her bibliography, the consistent thread is transformation: characters are rarely defined by who they are at the beginning, but by what happens when suffering, faith, love, and responsibility force them to become someone different.
