About Karen White

Karen White is an American novelist known for Southern women’s fiction that blends family drama, mystery, romance, historical secrets, and occasional supernatural elements. Although much of her work is rooted in Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and other Southern settings, she spent most of her childhood in London, England. That combination of Southern family roots and an upbringing abroad helped shape a body of fiction particularly attentive to place, memory, inherited traditions, and the complicated relationships between generations.

White did not initially plan on a literary career. She attended Tulane University in New Orleans, graduating cum laude with a degree in management, and first pursued a career in business. Roughly a decade later, she began writing fiction. Her debut novel, In the Shadow of the Moon, was originally published in 2000, beginning a career that has grown to nearly forty novels and established her as a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author.

Many of White’s stand-alone novels revolve around women returning to places connected with their pasts. Old houses, family possessions, letters, photographs, and local histories frequently become ways of uncovering stories that earlier generations attempted to conceal. The Memory of Water, The Lost Hours, On Folly Beach, The Beach Trees, Sea Change, The Time Between, A Long Time Gone, and The Sound of Glass all approach family history from different directions, often placing contemporary characters alongside mysteries rooted decades earlier.

Historical narratives became increasingly prominent in later work. The Last Night in London moves between wartime London and the present, while collaborative novels such as The Forgotten Room, The Glass Ocean, All the Ways We Said Goodbye, and The Lost Summers of Newport connect women across different periods through places, objects, and unresolved family histories. White wrote these collaborations with Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig, combining three distinct voices within interconnected narratives.

Her best-known continuing work is the Tradd Street series. Beginning with The House on Tradd Street, it follows Melanie Middleton, a Charleston real-estate agent who specializes in historic properties despite having little affection for old houses or the ghosts she can see. Her inheritance of a neglected Tradd Street home brings her into contact with writer Jack Trenholm and a succession of mysteries involving Charleston families, hidden objects, supernatural activity, and Melanie’s own complicated history. Across seven novels, the series develops from individual haunted-house mysteries into a broader story about marriage, motherhood, friendship, and accepting abilities Melanie would prefer to ignore.

White later expanded that fictional world through the Royal Street series. Set in post-Katrina New Orleans, it follows Nola Trenholm as she restores an old house and encounters secrets connected with both the living and the dead. Beginning with The Shop on Royal Street, the series preserves the mixture of historic architecture, family mystery, romance, and supernatural suspense associated with Tradd Street while giving Nola a distinct setting and identity. It continued through The House on Prytania and The Lady on Esplanade.

White’s fiction is particularly recognizable for the way houses function almost as characters. Restoration frequently parallels emotional recovery, while architecture preserves evidence of marriages, betrayals, wars, and relationships forgotten by later generations. Her protagonists may believe they are investigating another family’s secrets only to discover that the past has direct consequences for their own lives.

Her bibliography ranges from contemporary Southern fiction to historical mysteries and collaborative novels, but recurring concerns give it coherence: complicated mothers and daughters, inherited secrets, friendship between women, houses carrying memories, and characters who discover that leaving home does not necessarily free them from what happened there.
