About Lisa Unger

Lisa Unger is an American novelist whose psychological thrillers explore memory, trauma, obsession, identity, family secrets, and the unsettling possibility that the people closest to us may be fundamentally misunderstood. Across more than twenty novels, she has moved between recurring characters, interconnected fictional communities, and standalone suspense while maintaining a strong interest in the psychological consequences of violence. Her books have been published in more than thirty languages and sold millions of copies worldwide, establishing her as a prominent contemporary voice in suspense fiction.

Born Lisa Miscione in New Haven, Connecticut, Unger spent portions of her childhood in the Netherlands and England before her family settled in New Jersey. At eighteen she moved to New York City, where she attended the New School and subsequently worked in publishing. She spent years developing the manuscript that would eventually become her first novel while building a professional career around books from the other side of the industry.

Unger initially published under her maiden name, Lisa Miscione. Angel Fire appeared in 2002 and introduced crime writer and investigator Lydia Strong. Lydia returned in The Darkness Gathers, Twice, and Smoke, forming a four-book sequence that established Unger’s early interest in psychologically damaged investigators, violent crimes, and the lasting effects of childhood trauma.

After marrying, she began publishing under Lisa Unger. Beautiful Lies marked a major turning point in 2006, introducing Ridley Jones, a New York writer whose seemingly ordinary life collapses after evidence raises disturbing questions about her identity and childhood. Ridley’s story continued in Sliver of Truth, further developing Unger’s fascination with how family secrets can reshape an adult’s understanding of herself.

Another significant strand of her bibliography emerged through The Hollows, a fictional small town whose apparently peaceful surface conceals disappearances, troubled families, psychic phenomena, and old crimes. Fragile and Darkness, My Old Friend feature former detective Jones Cooper, while In the Blood, Crazy Love You, and Ink and Bone approach the community through different protagonists. The books are interconnected by place and recurring characters rather than functioning as a conventional single-detective sequence.

Unger increasingly concentrated on standalone psychological suspense with novels such as Black Out, Die for You, The Red Hunter, and Under My Skin. The latter follows a widow whose memories surrounding her husband’s murder have become dangerously unreliable. Unger received two Edgar Award nominations in 2019, including recognition for Under My Skin and her short fiction.

Later novels have repeatedly examined modern forms of vulnerability. Confessions on the 7:45 begins with an intimate conversation between strangers that develops into manipulation and disappearance, while Last Girl Ghosted turns online dating into a disturbing investigation of identity and predation. Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six uses a luxury getaway to expose family secrets, and The New Couple in 5B combines psychological suspense with the ominous history of a Manhattan apartment building.

Her 2025 thriller Close Your Eyes and Count to 10 places contestants inside an extreme hide-and-seek competition engineered for an online audience. Served Him Right, published in 2026, continues her interest in long-buried secrets, revenge, and people discovering that carefully constructed lives can collapse when the past returns.

Unger’s novels differ widely in premise, but their tension usually begins inside relationships rather than with anonymous danger. Partners deceive one another, families suppress uncomfortable histories, memories prove incomplete, and supposedly safe places acquire hidden meanings. Crime supplies the suspense, but the deeper question running through her work is more intimate: how well can anyone truly know another person—or even trust the story they tell themselves?
