About The Hollows

Kim Harrison’s The Hollows is a long-running urban fantasy series centered on Rachel Morgan, a witch whose career as an independent runner gradually draws her into the deepest political, magical, and personal conflicts of an alternate Cincinnati. The series blends supernatural mystery, action, humor, romance, and intricate fantasy mythology, but its strongest continuity comes from relationships that change over many years. Rachel’s friendships with vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks, her complicated history with elf Trent Kalamack, and her dealings with demons such as Algaliarept become increasingly important as her understanding of herself changes.

The world of the Hollows diverged dramatically from ordinary history after genetically engineered tomatoes carried a virus that killed a large portion of humanity. Supernatural beings—collectively known as Inderlanders—survived in much greater numbers and subsequently revealed themselves. Humans now coexist uneasily with witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies, elves, demons, and other beings, while organizations such as the Inderland Security and the Federal Inderland Bureau attempt to maintain order.

Dead Witch Walking begins with Rachel leaving her job at Inderland Security, an act that effectively places a death sentence on her. Ivy and Jenks join her in forming the independent investigation service Vampiric Charms, establishing the partnership around which much of the early series develops. Initially, Rachel deals with supernatural crimes, dangerous assignments, and local power struggles. Those comparatively contained problems gradually expose conflicts involving ancient magical history, demon society, vampire politics, elven power, ley lines, and Rachel’s own unusual heritage.

Rachel’s progression is central to the series. She begins convinced that she understands what kind of witch she is and where she belongs within supernatural society. Successive revelations force her to reconsider both assumptions. Powers she fears, enemies she despises, and communities she has been taught to distrust become more complicated as Harrison reveals the historical relationships between witches, elves, and demons. Rachel’s instinct to protect people frequently puts her at odds with supernatural authorities, but it also gives her an increasingly significant position within Cincinnati.

The relationship between Rachel and Trent provides another long-running thread. Trent initially appears as a dangerous, morally questionable businessman whose goals frequently conflict with Rachel’s. Years of reluctant cooperation, shared danger, political necessity, and changing perceptions gradually transform that relationship. Harrison allows the shift to unfold over numerous books rather than abruptly rewriting either character, making their development closely tied to the larger evolution of the series.

The Witch with No Name originally completed the main Rachel Morgan arc in 2014, resolving major conflicts that had accumulated since the beginning. Harrison subsequently returned to the Hollows with American Demon in 2020, beginning a continuation that examines what happens after Rachel has already altered the supernatural balance of power. The later novels expand her responsibilities rather than simply recreating the early runner-for-hire formula. As of August 2026, eighteen principal Hollows novels have been published, with Absolute Demon, the nineteenth, scheduled for February 9, 2027.

The wider Hollows bibliography also includes the historical prequel The Turn, graphic novels, novellas, short stories, and The Hollows Insider, an illustrated guide to the world. Harrison’s official reading order places many of those shorter works between specific novels because they provide additional perspectives on characters such as Ivy, Jenks, Ceri, Al, and Pierce, although the principal novels remain the backbone of Rachel’s story.

What gives The Hollows unusual longevity is that its mythology and relationships evolve together. Cincinnati changes because Rachel changes it, alliances retain consequences, former enemies do not simply disappear, and revelations from early books continue influencing events much later. The result is less a collection of supernatural cases than an extended character saga about a woman gradually becoming one of the most consequential figures in a world she once believed she merely inhabited.
