About Myths & Outlaws
The Myths & Outlaws series by Sherrilyn Kenyon is a fantasy romance saga set in the Thirteen Kingdoms, a world of ancient magic, shapeshifting creatures, rival monarchies, and dangerous political alliances. At its centre is an unlikely brotherhood of outlaws who have forged a family through shared suffering and betrayal. Bringing together assassins, princes, pirates, thieves, and supernatural beings, the novels explore loyalty, vengeance, forbidden relationships, and the struggle to protect kingdoms threatened by war.
Unlike Kenyon’s contemporary Dark-Hunter novels, Myths & Outlaws takes place in a fully imagined fantasy world where dragons, unicorns, centaurs, trolls, and other extraordinary creatures possess their own territories, traditions, and political interests. The relationships between these factions are shaped by generations of conflict, with longstanding prejudices making cooperation particularly dangerous.
The Outlaws provide the series with its central connection. Although their members come from radically different backgrounds, they are united by experiences of tragedy and injustice. Their loyalty to one another frequently proves stronger than their obligations to rulers, kingdoms, or inherited allegiances. This unconventional brotherhood becomes especially important as competing powers threaten the fragile stability of the Thirteen Kingdoms.
The opening novel, House of Fire & Magic (2024), introduces Dash Coeur de Noir, the feared High King of the unicorns and a founding member of the Outlaws. Despite his formidable position, Dash is pursuing a deeply personal mission: recovering his sister’s stolen horn, a powerful object whose misuse could destroy the delicate peace between the kingdoms.
His path crosses that of Tanis, the youngest daughter of King Iagan of Indara. A dragon princess devastated by the murder of her beloved older brother, Tanis is determined to avenge his death and restore her family’s honour. Her pursuit of justice requires an alliance with Dash, even though unicorns and dragons have been bitter enemies for centuries.
Their relationship introduces one of the series’ defining conflicts. Both characters carry profound personal losses, yet their inherited hostility makes trust almost impossible. Forced to cooperate while pursued by dangerous enemies, they must confront the difference between loyalty to their respective peoples and the possibility of discovering common ground.
The second novel, House of Ice & Shadows (2026), shifts attention to Gisela Bloodthorn, an assassin raised in captivity within the centaur court. Trained from childhood to kill without hesitation, Gisela has survived through obedience, exceptional skill, and emotional restraint. When the centaur queen offers her freedom in exchange for a final assignment, she is tasked with protecting an Oath Keeper whose contract has significant consequences for the kingdom’s enemies.
Her mission brings her into conflict with Xaydin, a feared Outlaw and half-troll assassin determined to eliminate the Oath Keepers. His personal history has left him ruthless and deeply suspicious, making him an especially dangerous adversary for someone whose survival depends on completing her assignment.
Their competing objectives expose the wider political and supernatural conflicts shaping the Thirteen Kingdoms. Like Dash and Tanis, Gisela and Xaydin must confront the possibility that the enemies they have been trained to destroy are not necessarily the greatest threats they face.
Kenyon develops these stories through overlapping themes of enslavement, personal freedom, inherited hatred, and resistance to corrupt authority. Her protagonists are rarely conventional heroes. Many have survived brutal circumstances and made morally difficult choices, leaving them reluctant to trust anyone beyond their closest allies.
The series is planned to continue with House of Air & Illusions, scheduled for October 2027. The forthcoming novel centres on Ryper, a mysterious royal assassin whose dedication to protecting others conceals a dangerous secret.
Although individual instalments feature different central characters, the Outlaws and the escalating tensions between the kingdoms provide a continuing narrative foundation. Each relationship reveals another aspect of the world’s political divisions and the personal sacrifices required to challenge them.
Myths & Outlaws retains Kenyon’s characteristic emphasis on emotionally wounded protagonists, fierce loyalty, supernatural danger, and redemption through meaningful personal connections. Its distinctive appeal lies in the tension between powerful individuals shaped by violence and their determination to build something lasting from the ruins of their pasts.
