About Jojo Moyes

Jojo Moyes is an English novelist, journalist, and screenwriter best known for emotionally generous fiction about love, loss, resilience, reinvention, and the practical complications of ordinary lives under strain. Born Pauline Sara Jo Moyes in London in 1969, she worked as a journalist before becoming a full-time novelist, including years at The Independent. That journalistic background shows in the clarity of her storytelling: her books tend to move briskly, with strong situations, accessible characters, and a steady interest in how social class, money, work, grief, and family shape private choices.

Moyes published her debut novel, Sheltering Rain, in 2002, followed by books such as Foreign Fruit, The Peacock Emporium, The Ship of Brides, Silver Bay, Night Music, The Horse Dancer, and The Last Letter from Your Lover. These early and middle-period novels established several of her recurring concerns: women at turning points, love complicated by timing or circumstance, family secrets, second chances, and the way the past continues to press against the present. The Last Letter from Your Lover, with its dual timelines and rediscovered correspondence, later became one of her most widely recognized standalones through its screen adaptation.

Her global breakthrough came with Me Before You, the 2012 novel about Louisa Clark, a cheerful, underemployed young woman from a working-class family, and Will Traynor, a wealthy former adventurer left quadriplegic after an accident. The book became a major international bestseller and was adapted into a film for which Moyes wrote the screenplay. It remains her most famous work, partly because it combines romance with grief, disability, autonomy, class difference, and moral controversy. Whatever readers make of its ending, the novel made Lou Clark one of Moyes’s defining creations.

Moyes returned to Lou in After You and Still Me, turning Me Before You into a trilogy about life after loss rather than a single tragic romance. Lou’s later story moves through recovery, family responsibility, new love, work, travel, and self-definition. The sequels matter because they shift the emotional center from Will’s fate to Lou’s unfinished life. Moyes is interested in what happens after the moment that was supposed to define someone forever, and Lou’s arc gave her a way to explore survival as a continuing, imperfect process.

Beyond Lou Clark, Moyes has written several major standalones. The One Plus One blends road-trip comedy, family pressure, poverty, and unlikely romance. The Giver of Stars moves into historical fiction, following women connected to the Pack Horse Library project in Kentucky. Someone Else’s Shoes uses a mistaken bag and a pair of high-end shoes to examine status, friendship, aging, marriage, and the shock of seeing life from another woman’s position. Her official biography lists bestsellers including Me Before You, After You, Still Me, The One Plus One, The Giver of Stars, Someone Else’s Shoes, and the story collection Paris for One and Other Stories.

Her more recent novel We All Live Here continues her interest in families under comic and emotional pressure, centered on the chaos of blended households, divorce, grief, forgiveness, and domestic resilience. Publisher listings identify it as a 2025 novel, keeping Moyes active well beyond the success of the Lou Clark books.

Moyes’s fiction endures because it is direct without being shallow. She writes about feeling, but also about rent, jobs, caretaking, illness, children, duty, and the small humiliations that make life harder than inspirational language admits. Her best work gives readers warmth without pretending that love repairs everything neatly. Instead, Jojo Moyes returns to people trying to begin again, often awkwardly, after the life they expected has already gone wrong.
