About If I Run

Casey Cox has spent years living with the knowledge that the people responsible for her father’s death were never brought to justice. When her closest friend is murdered and evidence points directly toward her, she makes a desperate decision: disappear before the police can arrest her. This dangerous predicament forms the foundation of Terri Blackstock’s If I Run trilogy, a Christian suspense series that combines a fugitive thriller with police corruption, psychological trauma, and an unlikely relationship built on trust.

Published between 2016 and 2018, the three novels follow one continuous investigation rather than separate mysteries. Their central tension comes from the contrasting perspectives of Casey, who knows she has been framed, and Dylan Roberts, the investigator hired to find her.

The opening novel, If I Run (2016), begins after Casey discovers her best friend, Brent Pace, stabbed to death. Her DNA and bloody footprints are present at the crime scene, making her an obvious suspect. Rather than contacting the authorities, she flees Shreveport, Louisiana, knowing that certain police officers cannot be trusted.

Casey’s distrust is rooted in the suspicious death of her father years earlier. She believes powerful individuals were involved in concealing the circumstances surrounding his death, and Brent’s murder suggests that someone is determined to prevent the truth from emerging.

Dylan Roberts enters the investigation as a former military investigator suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Hired to locate Casey, he initially approaches the assignment as an opportunity to rebuild his professional confidence. However, inconsistencies in the evidence soon make him question whether the woman he is pursuing is actually responsible for the crime.

The contrast between Casey and Dylan provides much of the trilogy’s psychological depth. Casey is resourceful, observant, and determined to survive, but her experiences have made her reluctant to trust anyone. Dylan possesses considerable investigative skill, yet his struggles with trauma and emotional instability frequently undermine his confidence.

Their relationship develops under circumstances that make ordinary trust almost impossible. Dylan must decide whether to follow the instructions of those who employed him or pursue evidence that contradicts the official investigation. Casey, meanwhile, cannot easily distinguish someone genuinely offering help from another person attempting to manipulate her.

In If I’m Found (2017), Casey continues moving between locations and adopting new identities while trying to gather evidence against the people responsible for Brent’s murder. Her determination to remain hidden becomes complicated when she encounters an abused child and a man who has also been falsely accused.

Despite the danger of attracting attention, Casey feels compelled to intervene. Her actions reveal an important characteristic that runs throughout the trilogy: even while fighting for her own survival, she cannot ignore injustice affecting others.

Dylan’s investigation also becomes increasingly dangerous as he uncovers evidence pointing toward corruption within law enforcement. His growing conviction that Casey is innocent places him in direct conflict with individuals who possess the authority and resources to destroy both their lives.

The concluding novel, If I Live (2018), intensifies the pursuit as Casey’s identity becomes widely publicised and her opportunities to remain hidden diminish. Dylan must help expose the people responsible for the murders while confronting threats against his own life.

Blackstock uses alternating viewpoints to sustain suspense, allowing readers to understand the dangers facing both protagonists even when they remain physically separated. This structure also exposes the disparity between what investigators believe, what Casey knows, and what corrupt authorities are determined to conceal.

Faith becomes increasingly important as the characters confront circumstances beyond their control. Rather than presenting belief as an instant solution, Blackstock explores how trust in God can develop through fear, uncertainty, and personal suffering. Dylan’s struggle with PTSD receives particular attention, alongside Casey’s difficulty accepting help after years of betrayal.

The trilogy was subsequently published in a single-volume edition, The If I Run Series Collection (2018), containing all three original novels. The opening book was also adapted into a Lifetime television film released in 2025.

What distinguishes If I Run from a conventional fugitive thriller is its sustained attention to the emotional consequences of persecution. Casey’s struggle is not simply about escaping capture, but about finding a way to trust again in a world where the institutions meant to protect her have become a source of danger. Through her evolving relationship with Dylan, Blackstock develops a story about courage, integrity, redemption, and the determination to pursue justice despite overwhelming personal risk.
