About Simon Gervais

Simon Gervais is a Canadian thriller novelist whose fiction draws on nearly two decades of military and federal law-enforcement experience. His novels move through counterterrorism, protective operations, organized crime, covert intelligence, political assassination, and international conspiracy, usually placing highly trained professionals in situations where official loyalties become uncertain. He is best known for the Mike Walton, Pierce Hunt, Clayton White, and Caspian Anderson series, as well as for extending Robert Ludlum’s fictional universe through The Blackbriar Genesis.

Born in Montréal, Québec, Gervais joined the Canadian military and was commissioned as an infantry officer in 1997. He trained in advanced reconnaissance and small-unit tactics at the Infantry School in Gagetown, New Brunswick. In 2001, he entered federal law enforcement with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, initially working as a drug investigator in Toronto. His assignments included international cases conducted in cooperation with American agencies, giving him practical exposure to cross-border investigations and the networks through which criminal organizations move people, money, and narcotics.

Gervais transferred to a federal antiterrorism unit in 2004 and subsequently worked on assignments across Europe and the Middle East. In 2009, he became a close-protection specialist responsible for visiting foreign leaders and other prominent officials. His protection details included Queen Elizabeth II, U.S. president Barack Obama, and Chinese president Hu Jintao. He later served in counter-surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations before returning to protective duties for the American and Israeli ambassadors to Canada. He retired from federal service in 2014 and became a full-time writer.

His debut novel, The Thin Black Line, introduced covert counterterrorism operative Mike Walton and began a sequence concerned with terrorism, economic destabilization, Iran, and privately funded intelligence operations. The series reflects Gervais’s early professional background particularly closely, emphasizing operational planning, international cooperation, and the physical and emotional damage carried by agents working outside public view.

The Pierce Hunt trilogy shifted toward a more personal action-thriller structure. Beginning with Hunt Them Down, it follows a former Army Ranger and DEA operative whose conflicts with cartels, intelligence services, and international conspirators repeatedly threaten his family. Hunt is capable of extreme violence, but the books give equal importance to fatherhood, divided loyalties, and the consequences of relationships formed during undercover work.

Gervais later created Clayton White, a former Secret Service agent whose proximity to the American presidency draws him into assassination plots and threats involving political power, organized crime, and international security. The series combines protective-service procedure with a strong personal thread involving Veronica Hammond, the president’s daughter. His Caspian Anderson novels take a different approach through a United Nations translator secretly operating as the assassin Elias. Caspian’s relationship with German intelligence officer Liesel Bergmann gives the books a double-life structure in which professional deception becomes inseparable from romantic trust.

In 2021, Gervais was selected by Robert Ludlum’s estate and publisher to write within the wider Jason Bourne universe. The Blackbriar Genesis introduced Helen Jouvert and Donovan Wade, operatives belonging to a counterintelligence unit connected to Treadstone but possessing its own mission and identity. The assignment suited Gervais’s experience with surveillance, hostile intelligence activity, and deniable operations while remaining separate from his independently created series.

His later work includes the Chase Burke novels, co-written with thriller writer Ryan Steck. Across these different continuities, Gervais writes direct, fast-moving suspense shaped by professional knowledge rather than technical display for its own sake. His protagonists understand weapons and procedure, but their most difficult choices concern loyalty: whether to trust an institution, protect a compromised colleague, obey an order, or act alone when the authorized response is inadequate.
