The Rogue River series is a four-novella romantic suspense sequence created jointly by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. Set in the small rural community of Solitude, Oregon, the books revolve around the Taylor family and a lethal new designer drug spreading through the region. Leigh and Elliot alternate authorship while maintaining one continuous storyline: Elliot writes the first and third installments, while Leigh writes the second and fourth. The result reads less like four independent novellas than a compact serial in which investigations, relationships, and family troubles pass directly from one author to the other.
On Her Father’s Grave introduces Stevie Taylor, an experienced LAPD officer who returns to Solitude after the death of her father, the town’s longtime police chief. Tired of what she has witnessed in Los Angeles and grieving the loss of the man who shaped her understanding of police work, Stevie accepts a position with the local department. Her homecoming places her under Zane Duncan, Solitude’s new police chief, while also forcing her back into the close family and community relationships she once left behind.
The immediate danger begins when a teenager dies after taking an unfamiliar drug. What initially appears to be a local overdose develops into evidence that something far more organized is operating around Solitude. Stevie and Zane’s investigation provides the principal law-enforcement thread, while their growing attraction complicates a professional relationship already subject to the scrutiny of a town where very little remains private.
Gone to Her Grave shifts the foreground to Stevie’s sister Carly Taylor, a social worker accustomed to advocating for vulnerable children and teenagers. When one of the young people connected to her work is accused of dealing drugs, Carly doubts the official explanation and begins looking for the real source. Her investigation places her at odds with Seth Harding, her estranged husband and the detective responsible for the case.
Carly and Seth’s troubled marriage gives the series a second romantic arc distinctly different from Stevie and Zane’s developing relationship. Seth worries that Carly’s willingness to put herself in danger for her clients has become impossible to live with, while Carly refuses to treat caution as more important than protecting a child she believes is being wrongly blamed. Their conflict becomes inseparable from the drug investigation as threats against Carly intensify.
Her Grave Secrets returns Stevie and Zane to the center after a skull discovered near the Rogue River reveals evidence of murder. The expanding drug trade is no longer a collection of isolated incidents; deaths, old secrets, and new violence increasingly point toward a network determined to protect its operation. The case also strikes personally at the Taylor family, raising the emotional cost of an investigation that has already transformed Stevie’s return home.
Walking on Her Grave brings Carly and Seth back into the foreground as the struggle over the drug trade escalates into a turf war. When a teenage witness disappears, Carly again becomes directly involved, forcing the family and local law enforcement toward the confrontation the earlier novellas have been building.
Solitude is central to the series’ appeal. Its small size makes every crime personal: police officers know victims, social workers know troubled families, and suspects may have decades of history with the people investigating them. Leigh and Elliot balance that intimacy with fast-moving suspense and romance, giving the Taylor family as much importance as the criminal plot.
Rogue River also serves as the foundation for the broader Solitude storyline.
