Melinda Leigh’s Bree Taggert series follows a homicide detective whose professional life becomes inseparable from the violent family history she has spent decades trying to outrun. Beginning with Cross Her Heart, the novels combine police procedural detail, rural crime, family drama, and a slowly developing romance, with each investigation adding another layer to Bree’s responsibilities as sheriff, guardian, sister, and partner.
Bree grows up carrying the trauma of witnessing the night her father killed her mother and then himself. She leaves Grey’s Hollow, New York, builds a career as a Philadelphia homicide detective, and keeps much of her childhood buried. That separation ends when her younger sister Erin is murdered in circumstances that disturbingly echo their parents’ deaths. Bree returns home to investigate and becomes responsible for Erin’s children, Luke and Kayla, permanently changing the direction of her life.
During that first case she works with Matt Flynn, a former sheriff’s investigator and K-9 handler whose friendship with Erin’s missing husband initially gives him a personal stake in the crime. Matt becomes Bree’s closest investigative partner and, gradually, something more. Their relationship develops across the series rather than being resolved quickly. Both carry professional wounds and complicated histories, and their partnership works because neither is treated merely as support for the other.
After Erin’s death, Bree accepts the position of sheriff in Randolph County. The decision places her in charge of a department that is not always ready to accept an outsider, particularly one prepared to challenge established habits and remove officers she considers corrupt or incompetent. Her leadership becomes one of the series’ strongest continuing threads. Bree must manage personnel, budgets, political pressure, public scrutiny, and dangerous investigations while learning how to build trust within a community she once escaped.
The cases range from disappearances and serial murder to domestic violence, cold cases, staged crimes, revenge plots, and attacks directed personally at Bree. Right Behind Her is especially important to her family history, forcing Bree and her brother Adam to revisit the abandoned farm where their parents died after human remains are discovered there. Later investigations increasingly test her ability to separate professional judgment from fear for the people closest to her.
Family life gives the series much of its emotional continuity. Luke and Kayla are not temporary responsibilities attached to the opening novel; Bree becomes their guardian and must learn how to provide stability while running a sheriff’s department. Adam remains another link to the childhood trauma the siblings experienced together. Bree’s relationship with Matt also evolves alongside these responsibilities, making later books as much about the family they are building as about the crimes they investigate.
The prequel short story Her Second Death takes place during Bree’s earlier career as a Philadelphia detective. A missing-child investigation parallels aspects of her own childhood and provides useful background, though it is supplementary rather than essential to the main sequence. Bree also appears with Kendra Elliot’s Mercy Kilpatrick in the crossover thriller Echo Road, which brings the two investigators together on a serial-killer case outside the numbered Bree Taggert novels.
The main series continues through Beyond Her Reach, with Kill for Her scheduled as the eleventh novel. Individual cases are generally resolved within each book, but publication order remains the strongest way to follow Bree’s transformation from a detective defined by survival into a sheriff, guardian, and partner who has slowly built the stable family and community she never had as a child.
