About On Devonshire Shores

The Summers sisters have grown up in the comfort of a genteel English household, but their father’s death leaves the family facing financial uncertainty and an unfamiliar future. Determined to preserve their home and support their ailing mother, they transform their seaside residence into a boarding house. Julie Klassen’s On Devonshire Shores series follows their experiences in Regency-era Sidmouth, combining historical romance, family relationships, personal sacrifice, and the challenges of rebuilding a life after unexpected hardship.

Set along the picturesque Devonshire coast, the series centres on Sea View, the Summers family’s home overlooking the English Channel. The changing fortunes of the boarding house bring an assortment of visitors into the sisters’ lives, introducing romantic possibilities, difficult decisions, and secrets that challenge their understanding of one another.

The series opens with The Sisters of Sea View (2022), introducing Sarah Summers and her younger sisters Emily, Viola, and Georgiana. With their father’s death leaving the family short of money, practical and responsible Sarah proposes welcoming paying guests into their home.

Although the arrangement offers a means of supporting their mother, not everyone welcomes the idea. Viola, who conceals a facial scar beneath a veil, is particularly uncomfortable about exposing herself to strangers. Her experiences illustrate the emotional consequences of society’s emphasis on appearance and the difficulty of overcoming deeply rooted insecurity.

The sisters initially expect elderly guests seeking the benefits of the coastal climate. Instead, the arrival of eligible gentlemen creates romantic complications alongside the practical demands of running a boarding house.

Sarah becomes increasingly interested in Callum Henshall, a Scottish widower, but her devotion to her family makes her reluctant to consider a future that might draw her away from Sea View. As the sisters adjust to their new responsibilities, they discover that financial independence requires courage, cooperation, and a willingness to reconsider established expectations.

A Winter by the Sea (2023) continues their story against the historically significant backdrop of the Duke and Duchess of Kent’s visit to Sidmouth with their young daughter, the future Queen Victoria.

When members of the royal household require accommodation, the Summers sisters agree to host three gentlemen connected with the duke’s staff. Their arrival introduces unfamiliar social pressures and secrets that complicate the household’s increasingly successful business.

Emily Summers becomes the central focus of this instalment. An aspiring novelist, she receives an opportunity from a local publisher who agrees to consider her manuscript if she first prepares a guidebook to Sidmouth.

Her research brings her into contact with the duke’s private secretary, whose assistance gradually develops into a romantic possibility. However, the unexpected return of someone from Emily’s past forces her to reconsider earlier attachments and the future she imagines for herself.

The novel explores the conflict between personal ambition and romantic expectations, particularly for a young woman seeking recognition for her writing in a society that offers limited professional opportunities.

In The Seaside Homecoming (2024), the narrative turns toward Claire Summers, the estranged eldest sister whose absence has cast a shadow over the family.

Following a scandalous failed elopement, Claire was sent away from home and has spent years living with an elderly relative in Scotland. After her relative’s death, she hopes to rebuild her life and restore her relationship with her mother and sisters.

An advertisement seeking a female business partner at a Sidmouth boarding house appears to offer a possible new beginning. Yet Claire fears that revealing her past will destroy the opportunity, particularly when her prospective partner proves to have secrets of his own.

Meanwhile, her younger sisters discover that she has left Scotland and attempt to find her. Their efforts challenge their mother’s determination to respect their late father’s instruction that Claire remain separated from the family.

The novel places forgiveness and reconciliation at the centre of the story, examining how social disgrace and rigid expectations can divide families long after the original circumstances have changed.

Klassen revisits the sisters in A Sea View Christmas (2025), a companion novella that provides a festive continuation of their lives.

Sarah promises Georgiana a memorable Christmas, but her plans become complicated by an anticipated journey to Scotland and the possibility of renewing her acquaintance with Callum Henshall. Having previously discouraged his romantic interest, Sarah must confront feelings she has repeatedly set aside in favour of family responsibilities.

Georgiana, now seventeen, eagerly anticipates Christmas celebrations, dances, and social gatherings. Her excitement grows when an unexpected romantic possibility introduces new questions about love and her approaching adulthood.

The series comprises three full-length novels and the Christmas companion novella. Although each novel gives particular attention to different family members, the sisters’ continuing relationships and Sea View’s changing circumstances connect the stories.

Klassen draws upon the social customs, domestic routines, and coastal tourism of Regency England to create a detailed historical setting. Sidmouth’s popularity as a seaside resort provides a credible foundation for the family’s business, while the restrictions surrounding inheritance, reputation, and marriage shape the sisters’ decisions.

On Devonshire Shores is distinguished by its emphasis on sisterhood and female resilience. Sarah, Emily, Viola, Claire, and Georgiana face different challenges, but their experiences are united by questions of independence, belonging, and personal worth. Through their intertwined stories, Klassen portrays a family learning that preserving a home involves more than maintaining its walls; it requires understanding, forgiveness, and the courage to embrace change.
