About Lorraine Bartlett / Lorna Barrett
Lorraine Bartlett is an American bestselling author known for her cosy mysteries, psychological suspense, and character-driven fiction. Writing under her own name and the pseudonyms Lorna Barrett and L.L. Bartlett, she has created several popular series, including the Booktown Mysteries, Victoria Square Mysteries, and Jeff Resnick Mysteries. Her work ranges from lighthearted investigations in welcoming small communities to darker stories involving murder, psychic abilities, and psychological trauma.
Bartlett lives in Rochester, New York, a region whose small-town atmosphere and community traditions have influenced many of her fictional settings. Before establishing herself as a novelist, she gained experience writing stories for romance magazines, developing the dialogue, character relationships, and narrative pacing that would become important features of her fiction.
Her first published novel, Murder on the Mind (2005), appeared under the name L.L. Bartlett. It introduced Jeff Resnick, a former insurance investigator whose life changes dramatically after a brutal attack leaves him with unusual psychic abilities.
The Jeff Resnick Mysteries follow his attempts to understand disturbing visions while becoming involved in criminal investigations. His relationship with his half-brother, Richard Alpert, provides an important emotional foundation for the series. Beginning with Murder on the Mind and continuing through novels such as Dead in Red and Cheated by Death, these stories explore family tensions, personal recovery, and the unsettling consequences of perceiving things others cannot.
Bartlett reached a broader audience with Murder Is Binding (2008), published as Lorna Barrett. The novel introduced Tricia Miles, the owner of Haven’t Got a Clue, a mystery bookshop in the fictional village of Stoneham, New Hampshire.
Known as Booktown because of its concentration of speciality bookstores, Stoneham provides the setting for the Booktown Mysteries. Tricia frequently becomes involved in murder investigations while managing her business and navigating her complicated relationship with her sister, Angelica.
The series combines traditional amateur-detective mysteries with stories about bookselling, family relationships, local rivalries, and the challenges facing small businesses. Its success established the Lorna Barrett name on the New York Times bestseller list and made Booktown Bartlett’s most widely recognised fictional setting.
Writing under her own name, Bartlett introduced another community-centred mystery series with A Crafty Killing (2011). The Victoria Square Mysteries feature Katie Bonner, a widowed woman who unexpectedly inherits responsibility for Artisans Alley, a struggling crafts marketplace.
Set in the fictional community of McKinlay Mill, New York, the novels follow Katie’s efforts to revive the business while investigating suspicious deaths and dealing with the complicated relationships among local merchants.
The series continued through The Walled Flower, One Hot Murder, and later instalments, including A Lethal Lake Effect and A Fatal Exhibition. Several books were written in collaboration with authors such as Laurie Cass and Gayle Leeson.
Bartlett expanded the Victoria Square setting through the Life on Victoria Square stories, which explore the experiences of supporting characters and provide additional perspectives on the community beyond the central murder investigations.
Her Lotus Bay Mysteries introduce Tori Cannon, who returns to the lakeside community of Lotus Bay after inheriting her family’s neglected business property. Beginning with With Baited Breath (2015), the series combines mystery, friendship, and the challenges of revitalising a struggling waterfront community. Related shorter works expand the lives of its residents.
Bartlett has also explored genres beyond crime fiction. Her Tales of Telenia fantasy series, beginning with Stranded (2012), follows a contemporary woman transported into an unfamiliar world. These novels demonstrate her interest in adventure, imaginative settings, and characters forced to adapt to extraordinary circumstances.
Her shorter fiction includes stories associated with Blythe Cove Manor, a setting involving visitors whose experiences frequently carry elements of romance, personal transformation, and the supernatural.
Across her different pen names, Bartlett maintains distinct approaches to storytelling. The Lorna Barrett books emphasise literary communities and cosy mysteries, the Lorraine Bartlett novels frequently explore small-business life and enduring friendships, while the L.L. Bartlett stories generally feature darker suspense and greater psychological intensity.
She has also contributed to collaborative projects involving other mystery authors, including The Cozy Chicks Kitchen, a collection combining recipes with contributions from writers associated with the cosy mystery genre.
Bartlett’s literary career has included an Agatha Award nomination and recognition as a finalist in the St. Martin’s Press/Malice Domestic competition. Her extensive bibliography reflects an ability to develop long-running fictional communities while maintaining individual characters’ changing relationships and circumstances.
Whether writing about an independent bookseller, a reluctant psychic investigator, or a determined businesswoman rebuilding her livelihood, Bartlett places personal relationships at the centre of her fiction. Her stories are distinguished by recurring characters whose friendships, family conflicts, and ambitions continue developing alongside the mysteries that bring them together.
