About Miranda James

Miranda James is the pen name of American mystery writer Dean James, best known for the bestselling Cat in the Stacks series and the Southern Ladies mysteries. His fiction combines traditional detective puzzles with Southern settings, eccentric characters, literary references, and the everyday pleasures of small-town life. A lifelong mystery enthusiast and professional librarian, James draws upon his extensive knowledge of books and libraries to create stories featuring amateur investigators whose curiosity frequently leads them into dangerous situations.

A seventh-generation Mississippian, James developed his enthusiasm for detective fiction during childhood. He began reading mysteries around the age of ten and wrote his first novel, The Mystery of the Willow Key, when he was twelve. Influenced by the Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden series, the unpublished manuscript marked an early fascination with crime fiction that eventually became the foundation of his professional career.

James pursued a career in librarianship, earning a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Texas in 1992. He spent more than two decades working as a medical librarian in Houston, Texas, and served as general manager of the mystery bookstore Murder by the Book from 1996 to 2005.

His professional experience extended beyond managing collections and helping readers discover new authors. He published articles on library science, medical history, and mystery literature, developing considerable expertise in the genre’s history and traditions.

His first published book, By a Woman’s Hand (1994), was co-written with fellow librarian Jean Swanson. The reference work examines women writers in mystery fiction and received the Agatha Award for Best Mystery Nonfiction. It also earned an Edgar Award nomination for Best Critical/Biographical Work.

James and Swanson continued collaborating on mystery reference books, including Killer Books (1998) and The Dick Francis Companion (2003). These projects reflected his longstanding interest in detective fiction as both entertainment and a subject worthy of literary study.

His fiction career began with Cruel as the Grave (2000), the opening novel of the Deep South Mysteries. Writing under his own name, he subsequently created the Simon Kirby-Jones series, featuring an unusual amateur detective living in an English village.

James also published the Trailer Park Mysteries under the pseudonym Jimmie Ruth Evans and the Bridge Club Mysteries as Honor Hartman. These different identities allowed him to explore varied characters and settings while maintaining his interest in traditional mysteries.

His greatest commercial success arrived when he adopted the Miranda James pseudonym for Murder Past Due (2010), the first Cat in the Stacks mystery.

The novel introduces Charlie Harris, a widowed librarian living in the fictional town of Athena, Mississippi, with his Maine Coon cat, Diesel. Charlie’s familiarity with books, local history, and the people around him frequently proves invaluable when investigating suspicious deaths.

Diesel became one of the series’ most recognisable characters. His affectionate personality and constant companionship provide humour and warmth, while Charlie’s methodical approach to solving mysteries reflects the author’s professional background.

The series reached the New York Times bestseller list with its opening novel and continued attracting readers through subsequent instalments, including The Silence of the Library, Arsenic and Old Books, and Something Whiskered.

James expanded the Athena setting through the Southern Ladies Mysteries, beginning with Bless Her Dead Little Heart (2014). The series follows An’gel and Dickce Ducote, two elderly sisters whose social connections, intelligence, and determined personalities make them formidable amateur investigators. Their adventures share the setting and occasional character connections of Cat in the Stacks while maintaining a distinct investigative partnership.

James’s writing is characterised by carefully constructed mysteries, conversational humour, and an affectionate understanding of Southern communities. His protagonists generally rely on observation, personal relationships, and patient investigation rather than violence or extraordinary abilities.

After spending more than thirty years in Texas, James returned to Mississippi, where he worked at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Rowland Medical Library in Jackson.

Across his various pseudonyms, James has developed a substantial contribution to cozy mystery fiction. The Miranda James novels remain his most prominent achievement, combining his lifelong enthusiasm for detective stories with his knowledge of librarianship and Southern culture. His mysteries celebrate the intelligence of ordinary people, the importance of community relationships, and the enduring appeal of a cleverly concealed crime.
