Connie Shelton’s Samantha Sweet Mysteries combine cozy crime, baking, romance, and paranormal fantasy in a long-running series set primarily in Taos, New Mexico. Beginning with Sweet Masterpiece in 2010, the books follow Samantha “Sam” Sweet as she transforms her life from cleaning and maintaining foreclosed properties to operating the successful Sweet’s Sweets pastry shop. At the same time, a mysterious wooden box awakens unusual abilities that increasingly draw her into mysteries extending beyond ordinary murder investigations.
When the series begins, Sam is rebuilding her life and dreaming of opening her own bakery. Her less glamorous source of income involves entering properties as part of a contract connected with foreclosed homes, cleaning them out and preparing them for resale. That work provides the unusual starting point for Sweet Masterpiece: at one property, a dying woman gives Sam a small carved wooden box, while at another Sam discovers an unmarked grave.
The woman who possessed the box was regarded locally as a bruja, or witch, and Sam soon realizes that the object is no ordinary keepsake. It gives her abilities she cannot readily explain, introducing the supernatural thread that distinguishes the Samantha Sweet books from Shelton’s more traditional Charlie Parker Mysteries.
The first investigation also brings Sam into contact with Beau Cardwell, a handsome Taos County law-enforcement officer. Beau quickly becomes far more than a convenient police connection. His relationship with Sam develops across the books, eventually leading to marriage, while their different approaches to investigating suspicious events create a useful partnership. Beau has official authority and investigative experience; Sam has curiosity, intuition, access to information through her community, and increasingly, abilities that conventional police procedure cannot accommodate.
Sam’s other great passion is baking. In Sweet’s Sweets, the second novel, she works toward opening the pastry shop she has long wanted. The bakery subsequently becomes one of the series’ central locations and an important part of Sam’s identity. Cakes, pastries, chocolates, holiday orders, festivals, and demanding customers frequently provide the everyday backdrop against which murders and supernatural problems emerge.
The magical element also expands well beyond its original purpose. Sam initially understands very little about the carved box or why it affects her. Over successive books, she searches for information about its origins and discovers that its powers are greater and more complicated than she first believed. Her own abilities develop alongside that knowledge, including forms of heightened perception and healing.
This creates two overlapping kinds of mystery. Sam and Beau may be investigating a murder, disappearance, suspicious death, or old secret while Sam simultaneously attempts to understand an artifact whose history follows very different rules. Shelton does not abandon the cozy-mystery framework as the paranormal mythology grows; instead, the magical storyline runs through conventional investigations involving recognizable human motives such as greed, jealousy, revenge, and fear.
Taos is integral to that mixture. Shelton chose the northern New Mexico setting partly because its history, cultural traditions, dramatic landscape, and associations with unexplained phenomena provided a natural home for Samantha’s supernatural experiences. The series frequently moves through the community surrounding Sweet’s Sweets, but Sam and Beau also travel. Sweets, Begorra, for example, takes them to Ireland after Sam learns about an inheritance from an Irish great-uncle.
Personal continuity becomes increasingly important. Sam and Beau progress from attraction to marriage, their careers change, and their extended family grows. Later novels feature Sam as a grandmother, while developments in Beau’s law-enforcement career affect the kinds of investigations in which they become involved. Sam’s daughter Kelly also becomes increasingly relevant to the magical side of her life.
There are shorter Samantha Sweet stories in addition to the numbered novels. Spellbound Sweets, for example, is a Halloween novella involving a murder and a missing rare book, while Thankful Sweets is a holiday novella set around Thanksgiving. These stories supplement the main sequence rather than beginning separate continuities.
