About Fatal

Washington, D.C., homicide detective Samantha Holland has built her career on determination, sharp investigative instincts, and an unwillingness to back down from difficult cases. Nick Cappuano is a rising political figure whose career places him close to the centre of American government. When a murder investigation reunites them, their attraction develops into a relationship that neither can keep separate from their demanding professional lives. Marie Force’s Fatal series combines romantic suspense, police investigations, political intrigue, and an evolving family story set against the pressures of life in the nation’s capital.

The series begins with Fatal Affair (2010), when Senator John O’Connor is discovered murdered in his Washington home. Sam, a lieutenant with the Metropolitan Police Department, is assigned to investigate the politically sensitive killing.

Nick, the senator’s chief of staff and closest friend, is devastated by the crime. His involvement brings him back into contact with Sam, with whom he previously shared a memorable encounter. Their renewed attraction complicates an investigation already attracting considerable political and media attention.

As Sam searches for the killer, she must navigate the senator’s personal relationships, professional connections, and secrets that could damage powerful reputations. Nick’s determination to help creates additional tension between his loyalty to his murdered friend and his growing feelings for the detective.

The relationship established in the opening novel becomes the emotional foundation of the entire series. Unlike romantic suspense books that introduce a different couple with each instalment, Fatal follows Sam and Nick through an extended relationship that develops alongside successive criminal investigations.

In Fatal Justice (2011), Sam investigates another high-profile murder while Nick’s growing political responsibilities threaten to complicate their personal lives. Fatal Consequences (2011) further explores the dangers associated with Sam’s profession and the emotional pressures created by their increasingly serious relationship.

The novella Fatal Destiny focuses on their wedding, providing an important personal milestone between the larger investigations. The prequel novella One Night with You, published later, revisits the circumstances of their original encounter before the events of Fatal Affair.

As the series progresses, Sam continues leading homicide investigations involving influential figures, violent criminals, political scandals, and threats against people close to her. Her reputation for confronting powerful individuals becomes both a professional strength and a source of danger.

Nick’s career undergoes equally significant changes. His political responsibilities expand from working behind the scenes to holding national office, eventually placing him in the vice presidency. His increasing public prominence introduces security concerns, constant scrutiny, and conflicts between political obligations and family life.

Their relationship develops through marriage, parenthood, and the challenges of maintaining intimacy while living under extraordinary pressure. Their adopted son, Scotty, becomes an important part of the family, offering a warmer domestic counterpoint to the investigations and political crises.

The supporting cast gives the series considerable continuity. Sam’s colleagues in the Metropolitan Police Department, including Freddie Cruz, Gonzo, and other members of her investigative team, develop their own friendships, relationships, and personal struggles.

Sam’s father, Skip Holland, also plays a significant role. A retired police officer whose career was affected by a devastating shooting, Skip maintains a close bond with his daughter and provides emotional support through difficult circumstances.

Later novels deepen the intersection between crime and politics. Fatal Identity (2016) involves a disturbing investigation into a possible kidnapping conspiracy, while Fatal Accusation (2019) connects a murder investigation to allegations threatening the presidency.

The sixteenth novel, Fatal Fraud (2020), brings another complicated homicide case into Sam’s professional life as Nick faces growing pressure to seek the presidency. The couple must balance their responsibilities while confronting grief, departmental controversies, and uncertainty about their family’s future.

The Fatal series contains sixteen full-length novels, beginning with Fatal Affair and concluding with Fatal Fraud, alongside companion novellas and shorter fiction. Although the central murder investigations generally reach resolutions within individual books, the continuing relationships and political developments form a closely connected narrative.

Sam and Nick’s story continues directly in Force’s First Family series, beginning with State of Affairs (2021). The continuation moves their personal and professional lives into a new political environment while retaining the romantic suspense and familiar supporting characters established in Fatal.

One of the series’ defining strengths is its sustained portrayal of an established relationship. Sam and Nick must repeatedly negotiate the demands of two exceptionally public careers without allowing professional responsibilities to overwhelm their marriage.

Through their experiences, Force explores the difficulties of maintaining trust, family stability, and personal independence when danger and political scrutiny are constant companions. The combination of police procedural mysteries and continuing romantic development gives Fatal its distinctive identity within contemporary romantic suspense.
