About Green Mountain

In the small town of Butler, Vermont, the Abbott family has built a successful business and a reputation for staying closely involved in one another’s lives. With ten grown children, strong family traditions, and a famously unpredictable local moose, their community provides the setting for Marie Force’s Green Mountain series. These contemporary romances explore love, grief, family loyalty, and second chances against the backdrop of Vermont’s mountains, country roads, and changing seasons.

The series centres on the Abbott family, whose Green Mountain Country Store has become an important local institution. Parents Lincoln and Molly Abbott have raised their children in a household where affection, teasing, and enthusiastic interference are part of everyday life. Their extended family, including the Coleman cousins, creates a network of relationships that continues developing across the novels.

The opening novel, All You Need Is Love (2014), introduces Will Abbott and Cameron Murphy. Cameron is a successful businesswoman from New York City who arrives in Butler for a professional assignment involving the family’s country store.

Her introduction to rural Vermont proves less welcoming than expected when she accidentally collides with Fred, a moose who has become something of a local celebrity. Will, whose responsibilities involve the family business, is drawn to the sophisticated newcomer despite their contrasting lifestyles.

Their romance establishes a central theme of the series: the difficulty of reconciling established ambitions with unexpected emotional attachments. Cameron has built a life around her career, while Will’s identity is closely connected to his family and hometown.

In I Want to Hold Your Hand (2014), the focus shifts to Nolan Roberts and Hannah Guthrie. Hannah is a young widow whose husband, Caleb, died while serving in Afghanistan. Although she has gradually rebuilt her daily routines, the prospect of another serious relationship remains frightening.

Nolan has loved Hannah for years but understands that pursuing her requires patience and sensitivity. Their story explores bereavement, emotional recovery, and the complicated feelings that accompany finding happiness after losing a spouse.

I Saw Her Standing There (2014) follows Colton Abbott and Lucy Mulvaney. Colton prefers the relative isolation of his mountain home, while Lucy’s professional commitments make a permanent move to Vermont difficult. Their growing attraction forces both to consider whether a relationship can survive such different expectations about where and how to live.

In And I Love Her (2015), Hunter Abbott develops a romance with Megan Kane, whose difficult experiences have made her cautious about trusting others. Hunter’s patient pursuit contrasts with Megan’s determination to maintain emotional independence, creating a relationship shaped by vulnerability and the challenge of accepting support.

The novella You’ll Be Mine (2015) returns to Will and Cameron as they prepare for their wedding. Their celebration brings familiar characters together and offers an opportunity to revisit the relationship that launched the series.

It’s Only Love (2015) centres on Gavin Guthrie and Ella Abbott. Gavin continues struggling with the death of his older brother Caleb, while Ella has long harboured feelings for him. Their romance explores how grief can interfere with emotional connection and how difficult it can be to recognise love when the past remains unresolved.

The sixth full-length novel, Ain’t She Sweet (2016), follows Tyler Westcott and Charlotte Abbott. Tyler, a wealthy businessman, finds himself unexpectedly captivated by Charlotte, a determined woman whose work with the family’s maple syrup business is an important part of her identity.

Charlotte’s reluctance to become involved with Tyler reflects concerns about independence and the possibility of losing control over her carefully established life. Their developing relationship provides another perspective on the tension between personal ambition and romantic commitment.

Although the novels focus on different couples, the Abbott family remains a constant presence. Siblings frequently appear in one another’s stories, offering advice, encouragement, and occasional unwanted involvement. Their parents’ enduring marriage provides an example of a relationship that has survived decades of changing responsibilities.

Fred the moose adds a distinctive element of humour. His unpredictable appearances reinforce the rural setting and occasionally disrupt the characters’ carefully made plans.

The Green Mountain series contains six full-length novels and the companion novella You’ll Be Mine. The related short story To Know Her Is to Love Her provides additional material featuring Will and Cameron.

The family’s story continues directly in Force’s nine-book Butler, Vermont series, beginning with Every Little Thing (2017). The continuation expands the focus to other members of the Abbott, Coleman, and Stillman families while retaining the established setting and recurring characters.

What distinguishes Green Mountain is its emphasis on romance within an enduring family community. Individual relationships develop alongside established marriages, friendships, and business responsibilities, giving the stories a sense of continuity beyond each couple’s immediate challenges. Through the Abbott family, Force portrays love as both a personal commitment and part of a larger network of relationships that continually shapes the lives of everyone involved.
