About Half-Moon Hollow
Molly Harper’s Half-Moon Hollow series is a paranormal romance and comedy series set in the same Kentucky vampire world as her Jane Jameson books. The series shifts attention away from Jane as the sole center and opens up the town of Half-Moon Hollow into a wider community of vampires, humans, witches, werewolves, Council employees, reluctant caretakers, and people whose ordinary lives are disrupted by the undead in very inconvenient ways.
The series begins with The Care and Feeding of Stray Vampires, which introduces Iris Scanlon, a practical human woman who runs a daytime concierge service for vampires. That premise captures the tone of Half-Moon Hollow perfectly. Harper is not writing vampires only as gothic figures of danger or seduction; she is interested in the everyday logistics of supernatural life. Someone has to deliver supplies, handle errands, manage paperwork, and deal with the fact that vampires cannot exactly pop out in the middle of a sunny afternoon. Iris’s business turns that practical problem into a funny, romantic, and surprisingly rich series doorway.
Half-Moon Hollow works because Harper treats the supernatural as both magical and awkwardly domestic. Vampires may be immortal, powerful, and mysterious, but they still have neighbors, exes, jobs, legal issues, social grudges, family drama, and terrible timing. The humor often comes from placing paranormal characters into ordinary small-town situations: dating, parenting, local gossip, awkward friendships, professional disasters, and the constant challenge of keeping undead life from becoming too chaotic.
The series also expands through different romantic pairings rather than following one couple across every book. A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses brings witchcraft into the setting, while The Dangers of Dating a Rebound Vampire and The Single Undead Moms Club continue developing the community through new characters and new kinds of supernatural complications. Harper’s romances are light, witty, and warm, but they usually involve people who are lonely, out of place, or trying to rebuild after life has taken a strange turn.
One of the pleasures of the series is how familiar faces from the Jane Jameson books remain part of the world. Jane, Gabriel, Andrea, Dick, and other recurring characters help Half-Moon Hollow feel like a connected supernatural town rather than a set of unrelated paranormal romances. Readers who start with the Jane Jameson series will recognize the background more easily, but Half-Moon Hollow gradually builds its own identity through its wider cast.
Later books such as Where the Wild Things Bite, Accidental Sire, Peace, Blood, and Understanding, and Nice Werewolves Don’t Bite Vampires show how flexible the setting becomes. Harper can move from vampire romance to werewolf complications, from bookish supernatural trouble to Council politics, without losing the series’ central charm. The town itself becomes the anchor: odd, funny, dangerous in flashes, but ultimately full of people trying to make strange lives work.
Half-Moon Hollow is best understood as paranormal romantic comedy with a strong ensemble feel. It is not dark urban fantasy, and it is not a horror-style vampire saga. Its appeal lies in banter, community, eccentric supernatural rules, and romances that turn immortality, magic, and monster politics into something surprisingly human.
