Richard A. Knaak’s Black City Saint series blends historical urban fantasy, supernatural mystery, mythology, and the hardboiled atmosphere of Prohibition-era Chicago. At its center is Nick Medea, a man who has lived for more than sixteen centuries because he was once Saint George. His famous encounter with the dragon did not end as legend remembers it: by killing the creature guarding the Gate between the mortal world and Feirie, George inherited its responsibility and became bound to the dragon itself. The two now occupy the same body, reluctantly depending on one another while frequently disagreeing over how their shared power should be used.
Chicago is essential to the premise. The Gate has remained fixed there since the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, an event known within Nick’s supernatural world as the Night the Dragon Breathed. By the 1920s, Nick lives among bootleggers, gangsters, police, immigrants, and ordinary citizens who have no idea that another realm exists alongside their own. His job is to prevent the Wyld—the most dangerous inhabitants of Feirie—from crossing into the human world while also dealing with supernatural beings that have already escaped. Knaak uses recognizable Chicago history and Prohibition-era criminal conflict as the backdrop for threats rooted in much older mythology.
Black City Saint establishes Nick’s burden and introduces Claryce, the latest reincarnation of Cleolinda, the woman associated with his ancient past. Nick has repeatedly encountered versions of her across the centuries, only to watch them die, making her return both deeply personal and ominous. The novel also forces him to rely more heavily on the dragon inside him as an old supernatural enemy threatens to tear open the boundary between the mortal realm and Feirie.
Recurring characters give the series continuity beyond Nick and Claryce. Fetch, a shapeshifter from Feirie, becomes one of Nick’s most useful companions, while the dragon serves simultaneously as weapon, adviser, antagonist, and uncomfortable reminder of the consequences of Nick’s original act. Their relationships evolve as later books reveal more about the Gate, Feirie’s politics, Nick’s past, and the forces interested in controlling or destroying the balance between realms.
The supernatural mythology grows progressively larger. Black City Demon combines a new threat to the Gate with escalating gang conflict, while Black City Dragon reaches more deeply into Nick’s ancient history and the lingering influence of enemies connected to his life as Saint George. These are not isolated monster investigations: discoveries about Nick, the dragon, Claryce, and Feirie accumulate across the novels, making the sequence more serialized than a typical case-by-case urban fantasy.
Knaak later returned to this world with Black City Angel, the fourth full-length novel, expanding the political complications within Feirie and the problems created by increasing movement between the two realms. The separate Black City Tales collects shorter adventures featuring Nick and his recurring companions, including stories set within the same supernatural Chicago. These shorter works supplement the main narrative rather than replacing the progression of the novels.
Black City Saint stands apart from Knaak’s better-known epic and franchise fantasy through its combination of Christian legend, European folklore, noir-inflected investigation, and real Chicago history. Nick may possess centuries of experience and the power of a dragon, but his role is fundamentally that of a weary guardian trying to keep two incompatible worlds from destroying each other—and trying, with considerably less success, to prevent the mistakes of his ancient past from repeating themselves.
