About Selfish
Shantel Tessier’s Selfish series is a three-book contemporary romance sequence built around two interconnected couples: Ashlyn and Ryder, and their best friends Becca and Jaycent. Published between 2016 and 2017, the trilogy belongs to an earlier stage of Tessier’s career, before the secret societies, organized crime, and deliberately extreme dark-romance worlds of series such as Dark Kingdom and L.O.R.D.S. The Selfish books are instead driven primarily by attraction, friendship, jealousy, misunderstandings, second chances, and the consequences of people struggling to admit what they actually want.
Selfish introduces Ashlyn as she takes a beach vacation with her best friend Becca before the two women move from Seattle to New York. Ashlyn approaches sex and love as things that do not necessarily have to accompany each other, making a vacation one-night stand seem uncomplicated. The problem is Ryder. What Ashlyn assumes will be a temporary encounter becomes considerably more awkward when the stranger appears in her hotel room afterward and turns out to be Becca more awkward when the stranger appears’s older brother.
Ryder has spent much of his adult life focused on work and helps run a major company. He has also been away from his sister for years, making his unexpected arrival part family reunion and part disruption of Ashlyn’s plans. Unlike Ashlyn, Ryder quickly decides that one night is not enough. Their relationship develops from that imbalance: she creates rules and attempts to maintain emotional distance, while he openly pursues something more permanent.
Rather than simply continuing Ashlyn and Ryder’s romance from the same perspective, Myself shifts attention to Becca and Jaycent. Both characters are already embedded in the relationships established in the first novel—Becca is Ashlyn’s closest friend and Ryder’s sister, while Jaycent is closely connected to Ryder.
Becca and Jaycent have their own complicated history. Jaycent previously walked away when Becca asked him to, even though he believed the man she had chosen was wrong for her. When circumstances give them another opportunity, he is determined not to repeat that decision. Their romance consequently has a second-chance quality, with past mistakes, lingering feelings, secrets, and opposition from people around them creating much of the conflict.
Selfless returns Ashlyn and Ryder to the foreground and completes the storyline left unresolved in Selfish. By now Ashlyn has admitted that what began as a supposedly disposable encounter became love, but mistakes and misunderstandings have pushed Ryder away. Ryder, convinced that he has lost the woman he tried to win, must reconsider whether walking away is genuinely selfless or simply another way of avoiding what they need to confront.
This structure makes publication order important. Myself is not an unrelated companion inserted between two Ashlyn-and-Ryder novels; Becca and Jaycent observe and participate in events affecting the original couple, while their own relationship grows from the same close social circle. Selfless then returns to unresolved consequences from both earlier books.
Tessier has also released the three novels together as the Selfish Series Box Set. It collects the existing trilogy rather than adding another principal installment. Taken together, Selfish, Myself, and Selfless form a continuous ensemble romance about two couples whose friendships and family connections make it impossible for one relationship to fall apart withoutaffecting everyone else around it.
