Shantel Tessier’s Dark Kingdom series is a five-book dark romance sequence set within a violent Las Vegas world of organized crime, powerful families, underground businesses, and men known as Kings. Originally associated with the Dark Kings name, the series consists of Code of Silence, Titan, Grave, Cross, and Bones. Each novel centers on a different couple and can function as its own romance, but recurring friendships, criminal connections, and family loyalties give the books a shared world that becomes more developed with each installment.
Code of Silence opens the series with Luca Bianchi, a man born into a powerful Mafia family, and Haven Knowles, the woman he left behind years earlier. Luca returns to her life with considerably more than an apology: a deal has been made that will make Haven his wife. Their relationship combines former lovers, arranged marriage, organized crime, and the tension created by Luca’s determination to obtain both greater power and the woman he has never truly stopped wanting. Although written as a complete romance, the novel establishes the dangerous social structure from which the later Kings emerge.
Titan shifts attention to Titan and Emilee York. Emilee left Las Vegas intending to stay away, only to be drawn back by circumstances she cannot ignore. Her return reunites her with a man whose feelings for her had existed long before either acknowledged them. Titan sees himself as someone shaped by bloodshed and control, and his pursuit of Emilee reflects the possessive, morally compromised relationships that define the series.
Grave centers on another King whose name accurately reflects his destructive lifestyle. Grave has spent years chasing danger through fast cars, drugs, women, and escalating self-destruction. Meeting April gives him something new to become addicted to, but Tessier does not treat his existing problems as superficial obstacles. Addiction, overdose, trauma, and the consequences of reckless behavior make this one of the more emotionally volatile entries in the sequence.
Cross pairs Cross with Alexa. Their attraction begins despite Alexa being considered off-limits, with both characters recognizing that pursuing it is likely to create consequences within their existing relationships and loyalties. The fire imagery woven through their story suits two people drawn toward something they know could become destructive but choose to pursue anyway.
The series concludes with Bones. Bones earned his nickname through violence and has little interest in pretending that being a King has made him respectable. His story begins when he agrees to help a friend protect someone in danger. That woman is Mia, born into a Mafia family but kept largely invisible after being sent from Las Vegas to Italy as a child. When her family decides she has value as a bargaining piece, Bones becomes both her captor and the person positioned to protect her from something worse. Human trafficking and Mafia power struggles make the final installment particularly closely tied to the criminal environment underlying the series.
The Dark Kingdom novels are interconnected without functioning as one continuous five-part plot. Each couple receives a principal story and resolution, while the Kings’ friendships and shared world provide continuity. Publication order remains the strongest reading approach because characters introduced on the edges of one story can become central later, and the relationships among the men gain more meaning as their histories accumulate.
These are adult dark romances rather than conventional crime-family love stories. Tessier incorporates graphic violence, murder, torture, kidnapping, addiction, coercive situations, and other potentially disturbing material alongside explicit romance.
