About Jenn McKinlay
Jenn McKinlay is an American author best known for cozy mysteries and contemporary romantic comedies built around close-knit communities, distinctive workplaces, and protagonists whose professional talents become unexpectedly useful when trouble arrives. Her fiction ranges from libraries and bakeries to London millinery, breweries, bookstores, and, more recently, supernatural collections of enchanted books. A New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestselling author, she has developed several long-running series while also establishing a substantial separate career in romance.
Her most enduring mystery series include the Library Lover’s Mysteries and the Cupcake Bakery Mysteries. The Library Lover’s books follow Lindsey Norris, director of the Briar Creek Public Library in coastal Connecticut. Beginning with Books Can Be Deceiving, the series blends murder investigations with library work, community friendships, literary references, and Lindsey’s evolving personal life. The continuity extends well beyond individual cases, with marriages, careers, friendships, and changes within the library accumulating across the novels.
The Cupcake Bakery Mysteries center on Melanie Cooper and the Scottsdale, Arizona bakery Fairy Tale Cupcakes, which she operates with her close friend Angie. Baking contests, weddings, festivals, business rivalries, and elaborate desserts provide the social environment for murders that repeatedly pull the bakery crew into investigations. Like the Library Lover’s books, the series combines self-contained mysteries with a continuing personal story, particularly through Mel and Angie’s friendships, families, and romantic relationships.
McKinlay created another distinctive cozy setting with the Hat Shop Mysteries. These novels follow Scarlett Parker and her cousin Vivian Tremont at Mim’s Whims, a fashionable London millinery shop. Her romance bibliography broadens that range considerably. The Bluff Point books are contemporary romances set in a Maine community where pets frequently play a role in bringing couples together.
