About The Lost Night Files
Three women awaken from a mysterious night with no memory of what happened to them, only to discover that their already unusual psychic abilities have become significantly more powerful. Their shared experience leads to an unlikely friendship and a determination to uncover the truth. Jayne Ann Krentz explores their investigation in The Lost Night Files trilogy, combining contemporary romantic suspense, paranormal mysteries, psychological manipulation, and dangerous scientific experiments.
The series centres on Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers, who were strangers when they stayed at the Lucent Springs Hotel. An earthquake and fire partially destroyed the property, leaving all three unable to remember the events surrounding the disaster.
Seven months later, the women have become close friends and established a podcast called the Lost Night Files. Their programme investigates cold cases and unexplained experiences, providing a way to search for other people whose memories or psychic abilities may have been altered under similar circumstances.
The opening novel, Sleep No More (2023), follows Pallas as she investigates a disturbing tip concerning an abandoned asylum in Carnelian, California. Her visit brings her into contact with Ambrose Drake, a man convinced that he witnessed a murder at the Carnelian Sleep Institute.
Ambrose cannot produce a body or reliable evidence, and his claims have been dismissed as delusions caused by severe sleep deprivation. However, Pallas discovers that he also experienced a mysterious period of missing time.
Recognising similarities with her own experience, she agrees to investigate. Their inquiries reveal troubling connections between the institute, experimental treatments, and individuals determined to conceal what happened.
As Pallas and Ambrose pursue the investigation, their professional partnership develops into romantic attraction. Both possess unusual abilities, but their experiences have left them uncertain about whom they can trust.
The Night Island (2024) shifts attention to Talia March, whose investigation begins when a podcast listener named Phoebe offers information about the women’s missing memories.
Talia suspects that she and her friends were subjected to experiments involving psychic enhancement. She hopes that a list of former research subjects might reveal the organisation responsible.
When Phoebe disappears before their meeting, Talia encounters Luke Rand, a mysterious investigator searching for the same information. Although their motives appear to overlap, neither initially trusts the other.
Their search leads to a remote retreat on Night Island in the Pacific Northwest. The establishment promotes an experience free from modern technological distractions, but its unusual isolation soon becomes threatening.
Electronic devices fail, communication with the outside world becomes difficult, and disturbing incidents suggest that previous visitors may have disappeared under suspicious circumstances.
As Talia and Luke investigate, their growing attraction complicates their already uneasy alliance. The isolated setting intensifies the suspense, forcing them to depend upon one another while confronting dangers connected to the larger conspiracy.
The concluding novel, Shattering Dawn (2025), follows Amelia Rivers, who has become convinced that someone is watching her.
Fearing that the stalker is connected to the organisation responsible for her missing memories, Amelia hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater.
Gideon initially questions her account, uncertain whether she is genuinely endangered or misinterpreting unusual circumstances. Nevertheless, their immediate attraction persuades him to accept the assignment.
Amelia also has reservations about her investigator. Gideon’s mysterious background and the disturbing paintings displayed in his home suggest that he possesses psychological and paranormal experiences he has not fully explained.
When Gideon interrupts an attempted kidnapping, the danger becomes undeniable. Their investigation eventually brings them back to the ruins of the Lucent Springs Hotel, where the original mystery began.
The case exposes a criminal operation involving illegal experiments with a dangerous drug intended to enhance psychic abilities. Amelia and Gideon must confront individuals willing to kill to preserve their research and protect the secrets surrounding the missing night.
Each novel features a different central couple, but the three women’s shared experience provides a continuing investigative narrative. Their podcast connects the separate mysteries while allowing the protagonists to exchange discoveries and support one another.
Krentz uses the women’s enhanced psychic abilities as both investigative advantages and sources of vulnerability. Their unusual perceptions help them recognise concealed dangers, yet their missing memories make it difficult to understand how their abilities developed or whether they can be controlled.
The romantic relationships explore similar questions about uncertainty and trust. Pallas, Talia, and Amelia encounter men whose own experiences have left them cautious, secretive, or psychologically troubled. Their investigations require cooperation before emotional confidence has fully developed.
The Lost Night Files consists of three novels published between 2023 and 2025. The trilogy forms a connected story, with individual romantic mysteries contributing to the broader investigation into the Lucent Springs incident.
The series is distinguished by its combination of modern true-crime podcasting and paranormal suspense. Through fractured memories, experimental science, and relationships forged under dangerous circumstances, Krentz explores the frightening possibility that someone’s most important experiences may have been deliberately concealed from them.
