About Amanda Quick
Amanda Quick is the pseudonym of American bestselling novelist Jayne Ann Krentz, whose historical romances combine intricate mysteries, witty dialogue, unconventional heroines, and suspenseful romantic relationships. Best known for her novels set in Regency and Victorian England, Quick has created a distinctive blend of historical romance and detective fiction, frequently featuring independent women whose intelligence and determination challenge the social expectations of their time. Her major series include Vanza, Lavinia Lake and Tobias March, Arcane Society, Ladies of Lantern Street, and Burning Cove.
Born Jayne Ann Castle in 1948, the author studied history at the University of California, Santa Cruz, before earning a master’s degree in library science from San Jose State University. She subsequently worked as a librarian, developing the research skills and literary interests that would become essential to her writing career.
Her first novels appeared in 1979 under the Jayne Castle name. During the following decade, she published numerous contemporary romances under several pseudonyms, gradually establishing a reputation for strong characterisation, emotionally intense relationships, and suspenseful plots.
She eventually organised her fiction around three principal writing identities. Jayne Ann Krentz became associated with contemporary romantic suspense, Jayne Castle with futuristic paranormal romance, and Amanda Quick with historical romantic mysteries.
The Amanda Quick identity emerged as she began concentrating on longer historical novels that allowed her to develop elaborate mysteries alongside romantic relationships. Rendezvous (1991) was followed by Ravished (1992), Reckless (1992), and Scandal (1991), establishing many of the qualities that would define her historical fiction.
Her heroines frequently possess unusual intellectual interests, professional ambitions, or unconventional reputations. Rather than accepting the limitations imposed upon women by nineteenth-century society, they pursue independent goals and become actively involved in investigations.
Quick’s heroes are often powerful, reserved, and intellectually formidable men whose carefully controlled lives are disrupted by women unwilling to submit to their authority. Their romantic relationships develop through verbal sparring, shared danger, and a growing appreciation of each other’s abilities.
Novels such as Mistress (1994), Deception (1993), and The Paid Companion (2004) demonstrate her talent for combining historical social conventions with intricate criminal mysteries. Questions surrounding inheritance, reputation, marriage, and financial independence frequently provide the foundations for suspense.
The Vanza series, beginning with With This Ring (1998), introduced an esoteric discipline associated with heightened awareness and mental control. Its historical adventures explore the relationship between investigative skill, emotional restraint, and romantic vulnerability.
Quick subsequently created Lavinia Lake and Tobias March, an investigative partnership introduced in Slightly Shady (2001). Their recurring adventures combine Regency intrigue with an evolving romantic relationship between two strong-willed characters whose methods frequently conflict.
The Arcane Society novels introduced another major development in Quick’s fiction. Beginning with Second Sight (2006), the interconnected books explore secret organisations, inherited psychic abilities, and dangerous experiments. The wider series crosses the author’s three principal pen names, linking historical adventures with contemporary and futuristic storylines.
Quick’s historical contributions include The Third Circle, The Perfect Poison, Burning Lamp, and Quicksilver. These novels retain her characteristic investigative partnerships while introducing more elaborate paranormal mysteries.
Her Ladies of Lantern Street books, beginning with Crystal Gardens (2012), feature women whose unusual talents make them valuable investigators. The stories explore the tension between Victorian social expectations and the independence of women who earn their living through unconventional work.
Quick later moved into twentieth-century historical romance with the Burning Cove series. Beginning with The Girl Who Knew Too Much (2017), the novels are set in 1930s California, where Hollywood celebrities, private investigators, and wealthy visitors become entangled in murder investigations. The seven-book sequence concludes with The Bride Wore White (2023).
Across her historical fiction, Quick combines careful attention to period atmosphere with a distinctly modern understanding of romantic partnership. Her heroines are rarely content to remain spectators, while her heroes must learn that authority and emotional understanding are not necessarily the same thing.
Her work has helped establish romantic suspense as a genre capable of combining historical adventure, detective fiction, and complex relationships. The Amanda Quick name remains an important part of Krentz’s literary career, distinguished by its resourceful heroines, mysterious settings, and enduring fascination with the secrets hidden beneath respectable society.
