About Futuristic World of Harmony: Ghost Hunters
On the distant planet Harmony, human settlers have built a new civilisation among the mysterious ruins of a vanished alien species. Beneath the cities lie vast underground catacombs filled with dangerous energy fields, unexplained technology, and secrets that continue to challenge scientific understanding. Jayne Ann Krentz, writing as Jayne Castle, explores this world in the Ghost Hunters series, blending futuristic romantic suspense, paranormal mysteries, and adventures involving individuals with extraordinary psychic abilities.
Harmony was colonised by humans who travelled through an interdimensional passage known as the Curtain. When the passage unexpectedly closed, the settlers became permanently separated from Earth and were forced to establish an independent civilisation.
Over time, the planet’s unusual energy began influencing human psychic abilities. Specialised talents emerged, including the capacity to detect, manipulate, and neutralise paranormal energy. These abilities became particularly valuable in the alien catacombs, where dangerous energy manifestations known as ghosts can threaten anyone entering the tunnels.
Professional ghost hunters use their talents to neutralise these hazards, often relying on specially tuned amber to focus and control psychic energy. Their work is organised through powerful guilds whose influence extends into commerce, politics, and law enforcement.
The introductory novella, Bridal Jitters (1999), establishes the futuristic setting through a romantic relationship complicated by unusual psychic abilities and the social expectations of Harmony’s inhabitants.
The larger storyline begins with After Dark (2000), introducing Lydia Smith, a para-archaeologist whose career was damaged by a disturbing experience in the underground catacombs. Determined to rebuild her reputation, Lydia becomes involved in an investigation requiring assistance from Emmett London, a powerful ghost hunter.
Their partnership combines professional suspicion with growing attraction while revealing the dangers associated with Harmony’s alien ruins.
After Glow (2004) continues Lydia and Emmett’s relationship, exploring their personal commitments alongside another investigation involving guild politics, criminal conspiracies, and dangerous paranormal discoveries.
In Ghost Hunter (2006), Elly St. Clair and Cooper Boone become involved in a mystery connected to their unusual talents and the dangerous activities surrounding the ghost-hunting profession. Their complicated romantic history adds emotional tension to an investigation involving secrets concealed within Harmony’s society.
Silver Master (2007) follows Celinda Ingram and Davis Oakes, whose investigation involves valuable paranormal objects and individuals prepared to exploit psychic abilities for personal gain.
The novel also develops connections with Krentz’s wider Arcane Society universe, suggesting that the secretive organisation’s influence extends beyond Earth and into Harmony’s distant future.
Dark Light (2008) and Obsidian Prey (2009) further explore the conflicts surrounding the ghost-hunting guilds, paranormal research, and the dangerous commercial interests associated with alien artefacts.
In Obsidian Prey, amber tuner Lyra Dore becomes involved with Cruz Sweetwater, a powerful businessman whose interest in an extraordinary discovery complicates their already difficult relationship.
The series’ mythology expands through connections with the Arcane Society and the Rainshadow novels. Midnight Crystal (2010), for example, belongs to both Harmony and the Arcane Society’s Dreamlight Trilogy, connecting events across historical, contemporary, and futuristic settings.
The Rainshadow stories, beginning with The Lost Night (2012), explore a mysterious island where unstable paranormal energy creates unusual dangers. Although often grouped separately, these books occupy the same fictional universe and share many of its underlying concepts.
Later Ghost Hunters novels return to Harmony’s major cities and their powerful guilds. Illusion Town (2016) explores the glittering entertainment centre of the same name, while Guild Boss (2021) examines the complicated relationship between Lucy Bell and Gabriel Jones amid dangerous paranormal investigations.
In Sweetwater and the Witch (2022), Ravenna Chastain and Ethan Sweetwater become involved in another mystery involving psychic talents and concealed criminal activities.
People in Glass Houses (2024) follows Molly Griffin and Joshua Knight, whose unusual abilities draw them into an investigation connected to an enigmatic mansion and dangerous paranormal secrets.
The world continues expanding through It Takes a Psychic (2025) and Enter the Nightmare (2026), demonstrating Castle’s sustained interest in Harmony’s evolving society and the consequences of its extraordinary environment.
One of the series’ most memorable features is its dust bunnies, small, furry creatures native to Harmony. Despite their harmless appearance, these intelligent companions possess formidable defensive abilities and frequently develop close relationships with the human protagonists.
The Ghost Hunters books are also distinguished by their combination of romantic partnerships and investigative suspense. Characters must learn to trust one another while confronting dangers that conventional technology cannot adequately explain.
The broader Harmony bibliography overlaps with the Rainshadow and Arcane Society sequences, so classifications sometimes differ between series listings. The main Ghost Hunters grouping begins with Bridal Jitters and the early Harmony novels, while later books continue the same world through additional interconnected storylines.
Through its alien landscapes, psychic guilds, underground mysteries, and distinctive romantic relationships, the series creates a futuristic civilisation shaped by humanity’s adaptation to an unfamiliar environment. Castle’s central concern remains the relationship between extraordinary abilities and ordinary emotional needs, portraying love and trust as essential even in a world transformed by paranormal power.
