About Harmony

On the distant planet Harmony, human settlers have created a civilisation surrounded by the mysterious remains of an extinct alien culture. Beneath its modern cities stretch underground catacombs filled with dangerous paranormal energy, unexplained artefacts, and secrets that scientists have yet to understand. Jayne Ann Krentz, writing as Jayne Castle, explores this world in the Harmony series, an expansive collection of futuristic romances blending science fiction, psychic mysteries, criminal investigations, and emotionally complicated relationships.

Harmony was colonised by humans who travelled from Earth through an interdimensional passage known as the Curtain. When the passage unexpectedly closed, the settlers became permanently separated from their home planet. Over generations, they established an independent society while adapting to an environment whose unusual energy affected human psychic abilities.

The planet’s most distinctive feature is its vast network of alien ruins. Dangerous paranormal manifestations, commonly called ghosts, inhabit the underground passages. Specially trained ghost hunters use their talents and tuned amber to neutralise these energy hazards, allowing explorers and researchers to enter otherwise inaccessible areas.

The introductory novella Bridal Jitters (1999) establishes the setting through a romantic relationship complicated by psychic compatibility and social expectations. The first full-length novel, After Dark (2000), introduces para-archaeologist Lydia Smith and ghost hunter Emmett London.

Lydia’s professional reputation has suffered following a disturbing incident in the catacombs. Her efforts to rebuild her career become entangled with a criminal investigation, bringing her into contact with Emmett, whose formidable paranormal abilities make him both valuable and intimidating.

Their relationship continues in After Glow (2004), an unusual development within a series that generally introduces a different romantic couple in each novel.

Subsequent stories expand Harmony’s fictional society through its powerful ghost-hunting guilds, independent investigators, and organisations studying the planet’s alien technology. Ghost Hunter (2006) follows Elly St. Clair and Cooper Boone, while Silver Master (2007) explores another dangerous investigation involving unusual psychic talents.

The novels establish that paranormal abilities are not without limitations. Different talents require specialised training, and individuals possessing powerful gifts may experience considerable difficulty controlling them. Romantic partnerships often involve people whose contrasting abilities become unexpectedly complementary.

The world expands further through Dark Light (2008) and Obsidian Prey (2009), which explore criminal conspiracies, psychic research, and the commercial value of unusual alien artefacts.

Several Harmony novels connect with Krentz’s wider Arcane Society universe. Midnight Crystal (2010), for example, concludes the Dreamlight Trilogy, linking contemporary and historical paranormal investigations with events in Harmony’s distant future.

The Rainshadow storyline introduces another important location. Beginning with Canyons of Night (2011) and continuing through The Lost Night (2012), it explores an island where unstable paranormal energy creates extraordinary dangers.

Rainshadow’s mysterious Preserve contains traces of alien technology and powerful energy phenomena. Its unpredictable environment allows Castle to introduce unusual psychic abilities while developing romances involving characters whose personal histories are closely connected to the island.

Deception Cove, The Hot Zone, and Siren’s Call continue this part of the fictional world, combining investigations into paranormal threats with the island community’s complicated relationships.

In Illusion Town (2016), the setting shifts to a glamorous entertainment destination where elaborate attractions, nightlife, and powerful criminal interests create a different atmosphere from the earlier catacomb investigations.

The city becomes increasingly significant in later novels, including Guild Boss (2021) and Sweetwater and the Witch (2022). These stories revisit the influence of the guilds while introducing new investigative partnerships and unusual psychic abilities.

Recent instalments, including People in Glass Houses (2024), It Takes a Psychic (2025), and Enter the Nightmare (2026), continue developing Harmony’s interconnected society and the dangers associated with its mysterious paranormal environment.

One of the series’ most memorable creations is the dust bunny, a small, furry creature native to Harmony. Despite their appealing appearance, dust bunnies possess formidable defensive abilities and often form close attachments to humans. Their intelligence, loyalty, and unpredictable behaviour provide humour alongside the more dangerous investigations.

The Harmony books form the overarching fictional world containing several overlapping sequences, particularly Ghost Hunters, Rainshadow, and Illusion Town. Consequently, individual novels may appear in more than one series classification. These overlapping entries refer to the same works rather than separate adventures.

Although the novels share a continuing setting and paranormal mythology, most feature distinct central couples and criminal mysteries. Their connections emerge through recurring families, guild organisations, alien technology, and the gradual expansion of Harmony’s history.

The series is distinguished by its integration of psychic abilities into everyday society. Castle portrays paranormal talents as practical skills that influence employment, social relationships, and personal identity rather than merely providing supernatural solutions to mysteries.

Through the dangers of alien ruins, the intrigues of powerful guilds, and the complexities of romantic trust, Harmony presents a civilisation that has adapted to extraordinary circumstances while retaining recognisably human concerns. Its appeal lies in the combination of imaginative worldbuilding and relationships shaped by loyalty, vulnerability, and the discovery that even exceptional psychic abilities cannot replace emotional understanding.
