J. T. Ellison’s Samantha Owens series takes a supporting figure from the Taylor Jackson novels and gives her a darker, more personal branch of the same fictional world. Dr. Samantha Owens begins as Tennessee’s head medical examiner and Taylor Jackson’s close friend, but her own series is shaped by a catastrophe that fundamentally changes her life: the Tennessee floods take her husband and children, leaving a gifted forensic pathologist struggling to function beneath overwhelming grief. Ellison uses that loss as more than backstory. Samantha’s attempt to rebuild herself becomes the emotional framework connecting the four published novels.
A Deeper Darkness moves Samantha away from the familiar Nashville environment when the mother of an old boyfriend asks her to perform a second autopsy in Washington, D.C. What initially appears to be a straightforward death draws her into a much larger investigation and introduces Xander Whitfield, a former Army Ranger who becomes important to her developing personal life. The case also begins Samantha’s gradual transition from a woman consumed by bereavement to someone capable of engaging again with work, danger, and other people.
The series soon establishes Washington as its principal arena. In Edge of Black, Samantha has begun again with a position in Georgetown University’s forensic pathology department, a new city, and a changing personal life. The investigation surrounding an apparent biological attack on the Washington Metro broadens the books beyond conventional medical-examiner mysteries. Forensic evidence remains central, but Ellison increasingly combines it with terrorism, government agencies, military history, and conspiracies whose implications extend well beyond an autopsy room.
That widening scope distinguishes Samantha’s novels from the Taylor Jackson series. Taylor’s stories are grounded primarily in homicide policing, while Samantha approaches violence through the evidence left on and around the dead. Her professional training makes observation, pathology, and reconstruction essential to how she understands a case. Yet Ellison does not confine her protagonist to laboratory work. Samantha repeatedly becomes personally involved in investigations, forcing a character trained to interpret death with clinical precision to operate in situations where motives and loyalties are considerably harder to measure.
The supporting cast gives the sequence much of its continuity. Xander becomes increasingly important as Samantha tries to imagine a life after her family’s death, while Washington homicide detective Darren Fletcher develops into a significant investigative ally. Their presence allows Ellison to balance forensic expertise with police work and action without turning Samantha into a conventional detective. By What Lies Behind, she is no longer working as a medical examiner, but her instincts and expertise remain central when Fletcher draws her into a suspicious crime scene that expands into a much larger threat.
Grief, reinvention, and trust consequently matter as much as the individual crimes. Samantha cannot restore the life she had before the floods, and the books instead follow the difficult construction of something new. Her relationships change, her career changes, and the scale of the dangers surrounding her grows, while forensic reasoning remains the skill that gives her stability.
The series currently consists of four novels, beginning with A Deeper Darkness and ending, for now, with What Lies Behind. Ellison has stated that she has plans for another Samantha Owens novel but, as of 2026, has not announced a release date.
