Joshua Hood’s Treadstone series expands the covert program introduced in Robert Ludlum’s Bourne novels through Adam Hayes, a former operative attempting to recover the ordinary life that Treadstone nearly destroyed. Written within the wider Ludlum universe but functioning independently of Jason Bourne’s adventures, the four-book sequence combines espionage, military action, political conspiracy, and the personal consequences of training human beings to become nearly unstoppable assassins.
Operation Treadstone has left Adam with exceptional reflexes, tactical awareness, language skills, and an ability to act decisively under extreme pressure. Those capabilities make him valuable to intelligence agencies and dangerous to anyone attempting to control him. They have also cost him years with his wife and son. His recurring objective is therefore not simply to survive another mission, but to escape the operational cycle that repeatedly draws him away from his family.
The Treadstone Resurrection finds Adam living quietly and working as a carpenter in rural Washington State. He believes he has left covert service behind until a cryptic message from a former colleague is followed by an attempt on his life. Forced to reactivate the instincts Treadstone conditioned into him, Adam begins investigating whether the attack originates with an old enemy, a foreign intelligence service, or people still operating inside the American security establishment.
The opening novel establishes the series’ central contradiction. Treadstone made Adam capable of surviving the threats it helped create, but using those abilities pushes him closer to the man he no longer wants to be. His memories remain intact, unlike those of Jason Bourne, leaving him fully aware of what the program required and what his service took from him.
In The Treadstone Exile, Adam has withdrawn to Africa and is using his piloting skills to support humanitarian work. His attempt to remain outside covert operations ends when an attack damages his aircraft and a seemingly straightforward transport job places him beside Zoe Cabot, the daughter of a wealthy technology entrepreneur. Her subsequent kidnapping draws Adam into a struggle involving extremists, stolen relief funds, competing intelligence interests, and another highly dangerous former Treadstone operative.
The Treadstone Transgression brings Adam back under the authority of Levi Shaw, the program’s director. Adam intends to leave fieldwork permanently and concentrate on rebuilding his family life, but Shaw persuades him to assist with what appears to be a limited assignment. The mission collapses, the strike team is killed, and Adam becomes the surviving loose end in a conspiracy whose participants are determined to erase every connection to the operation. His struggle to return home for his young son’s birthday gives the pursuit an urgency beyond professional survival.
The final installment, The Treadstone Rendition, unfolds during the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. Adam has again promised his wife that he will no longer risk his life, but Abdul Nassir, an Afghan who once saved him, asks for help escaping the Taliban takeover. Nassir possesses photographic evidence of a massacre committed by rogue CIA contractors and trusts only Adam to bring him and the proof to safety. The rescue forces Adam to confront both the chaos of evacuation and enemies who cannot allow the evidence to become public.
Publication order provides the clearest reading experience because Adam’s relationship with Treadstone, Levi Shaw, and his family evolves continuously.
