About Tracy Hickman

Tracy Hickman is an American fantasy novelist and game designer whose career is closely tied to the development of story-driven role-playing adventures and the rise of Dragonlance as one of the major worlds associated with Dungeons & Dragons. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1955, Hickman entered professional publishing through game design before becoming widely known as a novelist. His bibliography consequently sits at the intersection of tabletop gaming and epic fantasy, with world-building, ensemble casts, moral conflict, and carefully structured quests recurring throughout both sides of his work.

Hickman’s early creative partnership with his wife, Laura Hickman, was important well before his novels appeared. Together they developed role-playing adventures including Rahasia and Pharaoh, initially publishing material through their own company. After Hickman joined TSR in 1982, Pharaoh became part of the Desert of Desolation sequence. Tracy and Laura also created Ravenloft, the influential 1983 Advanced Dungeons & Dragons adventure that introduced Count Strahd von Zarovich and Castle Ravenloft. Its emphasis on atmosphere, character motivation, and a strong central villain demonstrated Hickman’s preference for adventures driven by narrative rather than rooms and encounters alone.

His defining literary collaboration began at TSR with Margaret Weis. Hickman had developed the foundations of a large fantasy project involving dragons, an interconnected world, and a continuing storyline; Weis joined the project during its development. Their partnership produced Dragons of Autumn Twilight in 1984, followed by the rest of the original Dragonlance Chronicles. The novels and accompanying game material established Krynn, the War of the Lance, and characters including Raistlin Majere, Caramon Majere, Tanis Half-Elven, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, Sturm Brightblade, and Laurana.

Dragonlance became only one part of the Weis-Hickman collaboration. Away from Krynn, they created the Darksword books, the Rose of the Prophet trilogy, and the seven-volume Death Gate Cycle. These projects allowed them to construct fantasy cosmologies independent of an existing game property while retaining their interest in societies shaped by magic, competing belief systems, flawed heroes, and conflicts whose consequences extend across entire worlds. The Death Gate Cycle in particular became one of their largest original fantasy creations.

Hickman has also written with Laura Hickman, including the Bronze Canticles, and developed fiction independently of Weis. His solo work includes the Annals of Drakis series, beginning with Song of the Dragon, alongside other novels and experimental storytelling projects. These books make his bibliography broader than Dragonlance, even though that setting remains the work with which he is most strongly identified.

His relationship with Dragonlance has also proved unusually enduring. Hickman and Weis returned to the setting repeatedly after the original Chronicles and Legends, producing later sequences such as the Lost Chronicles. Decades after their first collaboration, they again revisited Krynn with the Dragonlance Destinies trilogy, beginning with Dragons of Deceit in 2022 and concluding with Dragons of Eternity in 2024.

Hickman’s bibliography is therefore best understood by separating his collaborative worlds from his solo fiction and game-design work. Weis is his principal novel-writing collaborator, while Laura Hickman has been a creative partner in both games and fiction. Across those different projects, his most recognizable contribution remains the integration of storytelling and world design: characters are placed inside elaborate histories and systems of belief, but personal choices ultimately determine how those larger worlds change.
