About Patricia Briggs

Patricia Briggs is an American fantasy novelist best known for the Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series, two interconnected bodies of urban fantasy that combine supernatural politics, mystery, action, folklore, and carefully developed relationships. Before creating that shared world, she spent more than a decade writing traditional fantasy, producing novels shaped by magic, political conflict, shapeshifters, damaged families, and protagonists who survive through intelligence rather than unquestioned power.

Born in Butte, Montana, in 1965, Briggs grew up in a household where reading was encouraged from an early age. Her mother was a school librarian, and fairy tales, stories about horses, folklore, and history became lasting influences. She studied history and German at Montana State University, interests that later informed her treatment of old legends and supernatural beings whose cultures extend far beyond the immediate events of a novel.

Briggs began her published career with Masques in 1993. The novel introduced the shapeshifting mercenary Aralorn and became part of the Sianim sequence, which also includes Steal the Dragon, When Demons Walk, and the later continuation Wolfsbane. These books share a fantasy setting but do not form one uninterrupted storyline around the same protagonist. Aralorn appears in two closely linked novels, while the others follow different characters within the wider world.

Her early bibliography also includes The Hob’s Bargain, the Hurog duology, and the Raven duology. Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood follow Ward of Hurog, a nobleman who hides his intelligence to survive an abusive father before becoming responsible for his endangered people. Raven’s Shadow and Raven’s Strike center on Seraph and Tier, a married couple whose family becomes entangled in an ancient magical threat. These works established Briggs’s preference for practical protagonists, complicated systems of magic, and romances that develop alongside family and political responsibilities rather than replacing them.

Her career changed dramatically with Moon Called in 2006. The novel introduced Mercedes “Mercy” Thompson, a Volkswagen mechanic living in Washington’s Tri-Cities who can shift into a coyote. Mercy inhabits a world of werewolves, vampires, fae, witches, ghosts, and other beings whose rules, rivalries, and histories gradually become visible to the human public. Her independence, mechanical competence, humor, and vulnerability distinguished her from more invincible supernatural heroines.

The Alpha & Omega series occupies the same universe but follows werewolves Anna Latham and Charles Cornick. Their story begins in the novella “Alpha and Omega,” originally published in the anthology On the Prowl, before continuing with Cry Wolf. This opening arrangement is important because the first full-length novel assumes that Anna and Charles have already met. Their books place greater emphasis on werewolf society, pack authority, trauma, and the developing marriage between two people whose unusual abilities alter established power structures.

The two series overlap through characters, political developments, and shared supernatural history, but each retains its own protagonists and narrative focus. Short fiction collected in Shifting Shadows and later works expands the setting through secondary characters, while graphic adaptations provide alternative versions of selected stories rather than new stages in the main chronology.

Briggs’s fiction is marked by emotional restraint, dry humor, coherent supernatural rules, and consequences that persist beyond a single adventure. Her bibliography is best understood as an evolution from self-contained traditional fantasy worlds into the increasingly interconnected Mercyverse, where every alliance, revelation, and change in supernatural politics can reshape both principal series.
