Kendra Elliot’s Callahan and McLane series follows Portland detective Mason Callahan and FBI Special Agent Ava McLane through four closely connected romantic-suspense novels involving kidnappings, serial murder, mass violence, corruption, and attacks on law enforcement. The series grew directly from Elliot’s Bone Secrets books, where Mason first appeared as a recurring detective. Rather than continuing to use him as a supporting character, Elliot paired him with Ava and developed a separate sequence in which their investigations and relationship progress together.
Vanished begins with the disappearance of an eleven-year-old girl from a wealthy Portland family. Ava is assigned to the FBI team handling the kidnapping and becomes embedded with the victim’s family while investigators wait for contact from the abductor. Mason enters the case through a more personal crisis when his own son becomes involved in events surrounding the investigation. The pressure strips away much of Mason’s professional confidence and forces him to cooperate with Ava at a point when both are accustomed to controlling their own work.
Their personalities create much of the series’ ongoing tension. Mason is older, experienced, stubborn, and strongly identified with his role as a detective. Ava is equally determined, professionally disciplined, and unwilling to defer to him simply because of his experience. Their attraction develops alongside genuine disagreement, giving the relationship a practical foundation in shared investigations rather than separating romance from the crime plots.
Bridged brings them into a case involving bodies suspended from Portland bridges. The unusual staging points toward a killer whose crimes are connected by more than location, while the investigation forces Mason and Ava to combine police and federal resources. Portland itself becomes an important part of the novel, with the Willamette River and the bridges linking different parts of the city contributing directly to the atmosphere and structure of the crimes.
Spiraled shifts toward a series of apparently unrelated shootings. Multiple incidents and competing explanations make it difficult to determine whether investigators are dealing with separate acts of violence or a larger pattern. The novel broadens the perspective beyond Mason and Ava, showing how different witnesses and victims interpret the same events. Their personal relationship also deepens, although Ava’s troubled identical twin, Jayne, continues to create instability that neither can easily control.
Targeted places the murder of law-enforcement officers at the center of the investigation. Mason and Ava must determine whether the killings are retaliation, political violence, or part of something more organized. The case again tests the loyalties within their professional circle while keeping Jayne’s unpredictable behavior close to Ava’s private life.
Recurring characters give the four books considerable continuity. Mason’s partner Ray Lusco provides a steadier counterbalance to his temperament, while FBI agent Zander Wells gradually emerges as a significant figure with his own painful history. Journalist Michael Brody, first introduced in Bone Secrets, also reappears, reinforcing the shared world between Elliot’s earlier and later series.
The four numbered Callahan and McLane novels form the core sequence, but Mason and Ava continue beyond Targeted. Both move into Elliot’s Columbia River series, appearing around Zander in The Last Sister before returning as the principal characters in The Silence. Elliot has described The Silence as an unofficial fifth Callahan and McLane novel, making it the natural continuation for readers who want to follow their relationship beyond the original series.
Publication order is especially useful here because Mason and Ava’s partnership changes substantially from book to book.
