About Riverbend

Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Riverbend Gap is a small community where family relationships, unexpected romances, and long-concealed secrets shape the lives of its residents. Denise Hunter’s Riverbend series, also known as Riverbend Romance, follows the Robinson family and those who become connected to them through love, loss, and surprising discoveries. The four contemporary Christian romances explore personal identity, forgiveness, emotional healing, and the difficulty of trusting others when past experiences have created lasting fears.

The series begins with Riverbend Gap (2021), introducing Cooper Robinson, a sheriff’s deputy whose chance encounter with Katelyn Loveland changes his life. While travelling along a winding mountain road, Katie loses control of her car and finds herself stranded dangerously close to a cliff. Cooper arrives and helps rescue her, creating an immediate attraction between them.

Their connection becomes complicated when Cooper discovers that Katie is dating his brother. Despite their feelings, both recognise the potential damage their relationship could cause within the close-knit Robinson family.

Katie has moved to Riverbend Gap hoping to discover more about her personal history and establish a sense of belonging. The warmth of Cooper’s family offers something she has long desired, making her emotional conflict particularly painful. Meanwhile, Cooper must consider how pursuing Katie could affect his relationship with his brother and his ambitions for the sheriff’s office.

Mulberry Hollow (2022) turns to Avery Robinson, a dedicated physician whose demanding professional responsibilities leave little room for romance. Having watched her mother die from a serious illness, Avery fears developing the same condition and has resolved to avoid attachments that might eventually cause others pain.

Her carefully controlled existence changes when Wes Garrett collapses outside her medical clinic after becoming seriously ill while hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Wes, a contractor, is undertaking the journey to honour a man who died saving his life. Grateful for Avery’s care, he offers to help renovate a neglected carriage house on her property.

Their growing friendship develops into attraction, but both carry emotional obligations that complicate the possibility of a lasting relationship. Avery fears the consequences of allowing someone into her life, while Wes struggles with guilt and a commitment connected to his past.

The novel examines the distinction between protecting others and allowing fear to determine the course of one’s life.

In Harvest Moon (2022), the series explores a different romantic situation through Gavin Robinson and his former wife, Laurel. Their marriage ended following a devastating personal tragedy, leaving both convinced that their relationship could not survive the accumulated grief and misunderstandings.

When their closest friends, Mike and Mallory, die in a plane crash, Gavin and Laurel discover that they have been named guardians of the couple’s young daughter, Emma.

Although divorced, they must work together to care for the grieving child and manage her parents’ apple orchard during the harvest season. The unexpected responsibility brings them into close contact, forcing them to confront painful memories and unresolved feelings.

Rather than presenting reconciliation as an easy solution, Hunter explores how grief can isolate people who love one another and how rebuilding trust requires acknowledging previous mistakes.

The fourth novel, Wildflower Falls (2023), introduces Charlotte Honeycutt, a horse rancher grieving the death of her mother. After discovering information about her biological father, Charlotte learns that she has family connections to the Robinsons.

Having long wanted a stronger sense of family belonging, she hopes to develop relationships with her newly discovered relatives. However, she fears that revealing her identity too quickly could jeopardise the acceptance she desperately wants.

Her circumstances become more complicated when she hires Gunner Dawson, an experienced horse trainer who prefers temporary employment and avoids forming lasting attachments.

Gunner has experienced profound loss, leaving him convinced that maintaining emotional distance is safer than risking another painful separation. His growing attraction to Charlotte challenges his determination to remain unattached.

Their relationship develops alongside Charlotte’s search for her family history, bringing the series’ recurring concerns about identity, belonging, and vulnerability into sharper focus.

Throughout the four novels, Hunter portrays the Robinson family as a source of both comfort and emotional complexity. Family loyalty provides support during difficult circumstances, but expectations and unresolved conflicts can also make personal decisions more complicated.

The mountainous North Carolina setting contributes to the stories’ atmosphere. Winding roads, rural businesses, hiking trails, and local traditions create a sense of place that reflects the characters’ attachment to their community.

Christian faith influences their journeys, particularly as they confront grief, uncertainty, and the temptation to protect themselves by avoiding emotional risks.

The Riverbend series consists of four full-length novels published between 2021 and 2023. Each features a distinct romantic relationship, while recurring characters and interconnected family histories give the books continuity.

Through the Robinson family and their relationships, Hunter examines how love requires more than attraction. Her characters must confront difficult histories, relinquish assumptions, and accept that meaningful relationships involve vulnerability. The series combines intimate romantic stories with a continuing portrait of a family learning that belonging depends upon honesty, forgiveness, and the willingness to embrace change.
