Jude Deveraux’s Providence Falls series, co-written with Tara Sheets, is a three-book romantic fantasy comprising Chance of a Lifetime, An Impossible Promise, and Thief of Fate. The trilogy combines contemporary romance, reincarnation, time travel, mystery, and supernatural intervention around Liam O’Connor, a nineteenth-century Irish rogue who is given an extraordinary opportunity to correct a mistake that altered another person’s destiny. Rather than simply winning back the woman he loves, Liam must help her fall in love with the man she was originally meant to marry.
The story begins in Ireland in 1844, where Liam is a charismatic thief and outlaw whose life becomes entangled with Cora McLeod. Their relationship violates a larger supernatural plan: Cora was destined for another man, and by changing her path, Liam has disrupted events extending far beyond their own lives.
After his death, Liam learns that his actions carry consequences. The forces overseeing fate offer him a chance at redemption by sending him forward to modern-day Providence Falls, North Carolina. Cora has been reincarnated as Cora McLeod, now a police detective, while the man she was supposed to love has also returned in a new life.
Chance of a Lifetime establishes Liam’s seemingly impossible assignment. He must enter Cora’s contemporary world, earn her trust, and guide her toward Finley Walsh, the man identified as her proper soulmate. The obvious complication is that Liam remains deeply attached to her himself.
Deveraux and Sheets use this conflict to question what destiny actually means. If Cora is genuinely meant for someone else, Liam’s duty appears straightforward, but human emotions do not behave according to supernatural instructions. Cora has her own personality, instincts, and choices, while Liam increasingly has to distinguish between repairing the past and surrendering the future he wants.
The contemporary setting also gives the trilogy a crime-fiction component. Cora’s work as a detective introduces investigations and danger alongside the romantic and supernatural plot, allowing Liam’s nineteenth-century instincts to collide with modern law enforcement and technology.
An Impossible Promise continues directly from the first novel rather than introducing a new central couple. Liam remains caught between fulfilling his obligation and his feelings for Cora, while supernatural complications make the boundaries between past and present increasingly unstable. The possibility of changing history becomes more dangerous as the characters learn that apparently small decisions can produce consequences far beyond their immediate relationships.
Thief of Fate completes the trilogy by bringing the questions surrounding Liam, Cora, Finley, and their intertwined destinies toward resolution. The final book pushes further into time travel and the consequences of altering predetermined events, forcing the characters to confront whether fate should be obeyed simply because some higher authority has declared a particular outcome correct.
That question gives Providence Falls more complexity than a conventional reincarnation romance. Liam begins with what appears to be a clear moral debt: he interfered with Cora’s intended life and must put things right. Yet the trilogy gradually complicates the assumption that one predetermined romantic pairing must automatically represent the best possible future.
The books should be read strictly in publication order. Chance of a Lifetime, An Impossible Promise, and Thief of Fate form one continuous narrative, with relationships, mysteries, supernatural rules, and revelations carrying directly between installments. Starting with a later volume would reveal developments intended to unfold gradually.
Providence Falls also revisits themes that have appeared throughout Deveraux’s career. A Knight in Shining Armor, Remembrance, and the Summerhouse novels similarly use supernatural devices to explore love across time, alternative lives, and the consequences of changing the past. With Tara Sheets, however, Deveraux turns those ideas into a sustained trilogy built around a particularly difficult romantic dilemma.
Liam’s task seems simple when described by fate: restore the life Cora was supposed to have. What makes the Providence Falls series work is the question underneath that command—whether love is meaningful because it has been destined in advance, or because someone is free to choose it.
