About Marie Force
Marie Force is an American bestselling romance novelist known for her contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and emotionally charged stories about love, family, and second chances. With more than 110 novels published, she has developed an extensive body of work spanning small-town romance, political intrigue, family sagas, and erotic romance. Her best-known series include Gansett Island, Fatal, First Family, Green Mountain, Butler, Vermont, and Quantum, each distinguished by interconnected characters and relationships that evolve across multiple books.
Force began writing fiction while working full-time and raising her children. Her early manuscripts explored complicated family relationships, emotional recovery, and the difficulties of finding happiness after personal tragedy. Although her eventual success came through both traditional and independent publishing, her development as a novelist required years of persistence.
Her Treading Water series represents an important starting point in her writing career. She wrote its first three novels, Treading Water, Marking Time, and Starting Over, during 2004 and 2005, before establishing herself commercially. The series examines love, grief, addiction, and changing family relationships, introducing themes that would remain central to her later fiction.
Her first published novel, Line of Scrimmage (2008), follows a professional football player attempting to save his troubled marriage. The story established her interest in romances involving mature relationships, emotional vulnerability, and the difficult work of reconciliation.
Force subsequently expanded her career through contemporary romances such as Love at First Flight, Everyone Loves a Hero, and The Wreck. These standalone novels helped establish her reputation for creating sympathetic characters whose romantic relationships develop alongside substantial personal conflicts.
A major breakthrough came with Fatal Affair (2010), introducing Washington, D.C., homicide detective Samantha Holland and political figure Nick Cappuano. Their relationship unfolds against a background of murder investigations, political ambition, and the demanding responsibilities of public service.
The Fatal series combines romantic suspense with continuing character development, following Sam and Nick through professional challenges, marriage, and family life. Force later continued their story in the First Family series, beginning with State of Affairs (2021), which places the couple in the White House while preserving the investigative elements that defined their earlier adventures.
Another defining achievement was the launch of the Gansett Island series with Maid for Love (2011). Inspired by Rhode Island’s Block Island, the fictional community provides the setting for stories involving the McCarthy family, their friends, and other island residents.
Unlike romances that conclude by permanently leaving their protagonists behind, Gansett Island repeatedly revisits established couples while introducing new relationships. This approach allows Force to explore marriage, parenthood, friendship, and community life beyond an initial romantic resolution.
The series became a major independent publishing success, with sales exceeding five million copies. Its original twenty-eight-book sequence has since been completed, with plans for a next-generation continuation.
Force created another interconnected community through the Green Mountain series, beginning with All You Need Is Love (2014). Set in Butler, Vermont, the novels follow the Abbott family and their involvement with the Green Mountain Country Store. The related Butler, Vermont books continue exploring the family’s relationships and those of the Coleman cousins.
Her Quantum series, beginning with Virtuous (2015), introduced a more sexually explicit approach to contemporary romance. Centred on entertainment-industry professionals, the novels explore relationships involving emotional intimacy, trust, and unconventional romantic dynamics.
Other series demonstrate her range. The Miami Nights novels explore family and romance in South Florida, while the Wild Widows series follows women rebuilding their lives after losing their spouses. Her Remington Family Law series focuses on a family of Los Angeles attorneys whose professional experiences with failed marriages have complicated their attitudes toward love.
Force has also written historical romance through the Gilded series, set in the early twentieth century, demonstrating her willingness to explore relationships within different social and historical circumstances.
Her commercial achievements include more than fifteen million books sold worldwide, translations into over a dozen languages, and more than thirty appearances on the New York Times bestseller list. She has also reached the USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists and received three Romance Writers of America RITA Award nominations.
An important aspect of Force’s career is her success as an independent publisher. Through her publishing business, she has maintained substantial creative control over her work while developing direct relationships with readers through newsletters, online communities, and author events.
Across her extensive bibliography, Force consistently emphasises emotional continuity, close-knit families, and the lasting consequences of romantic decisions. Her characters frequently return in supporting roles, allowing relationships to mature as fictional communities grow. This commitment to ongoing character development has become one of the defining qualities of her romance fiction.
