About James Grippando
James Grippando is an American bestselling novelist and attorney best known for his legal thrillers featuring Miami criminal defence lawyer Jack Swyteck. Drawing upon his extensive experience as a trial lawyer, Grippando creates suspenseful stories involving murder investigations, courtroom battles, political corruption, and difficult questions about justice. His fiction combines legal realism with fast-paced plotting, exploring how personal loyalties, institutional failures, and powerful interests can complicate the search for truth.
Grippando grew up in Antioch, Illinois, a small community near the Wisconsin border. Raised in a family of five children, he spent his early years surrounded by farmland, lakes, and the outdoor activities associated with rural Midwestern life. His mother, a nurse who later earned a doctorate in education, encouraged his intellectual development, while an influential high school English teacher helped establish his lifelong appreciation of literature.
He initially attended the University of Illinois before transferring to the University of Florida, where he earned both his undergraduate and law degrees with honours. During law school, he served as executive editor of the University of Florida Law Review, developing the research and analytical skills that would later influence his fiction.
After graduating, Grippando clerked for Judge Thomas A. Clark of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. His exposure to death penalty appeals proved particularly important, raising questions about wrongful convictions and the possibility of irreversible mistakes within the criminal justice system.
He subsequently practised law at the Miami firm Steel Hector & Davis, handling complex litigation for twelve years. Among his notable professional experiences was representing poultry farmers in a major commercial dispute, a case that demonstrated how individuals with limited resources could challenge powerful corporations.
Although successful as an attorney, Grippando continued pursuing fiction. His first completed manuscript failed to find a publisher, but literary agent Arthur Pine encouraged him to develop another novel.
His breakthrough arrived with The Pardon (1994), introducing Jack Swyteck, a young Miami defence attorney whose estranged father serves as Florida’s governor. The novel centres on a controversial death penalty case and the dangerous consequences of decisions made within the justice system.
Jack became Grippando’s signature character, eventually appearing in a long-running series combining criminal defence, investigative suspense, and personal relationships. His friendship with Theo Knight, a former death row inmate, provides an important connection between the legal establishment and individuals whose experiences reveal its weaknesses.
Grippando initially alternated between standalone thrillers and the Swyteck books. Early independent novels included The Informant (1996), Found Money (1998), and The Abduction (1998), demonstrating his interest in financial deception, criminal conspiracies, and ordinary people confronted by extraordinary danger.
The Jack Swyteck series resumed with Beyond Suspicion (2002) and developed into increasingly complex investigations involving international crime, political controversies, and difficult ethical dilemmas.
In Gone Again (2016), Jack becomes involved in a death penalty case concerning a missing teenager and a convicted murderer whose guilt is suddenly questioned. The novel received the 2017 Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction, recognising fiction that illuminates the role of lawyers in society and their capacity to effect change.
Later instalments address contemporary concerns through legal suspense. The Girl in the Glass Box (2019) examines immigration and detention, while The Big Lie (2020) explores a controversial presidential election. Twenty (2021) confronts the consequences of gun violence.
Goodbye Girl (2024) draws upon disputes over music ownership and digital piracy, reflecting Grippando’s professional experience with intellectual property litigation. Grave Danger (2025) examines an international child custody dispute, while The Right to Remain (2026) continues Jack’s career through another challenging legal investigation.
Beyond the Swyteck novels, Grippando has written standalone thrillers exploring different aspects of crime and contemporary society. Cane and Abe (2015) combines a murder investigation with tensions surrounding Florida’s sugar industry, while Cash Landing (2015) draws inspiration from a major airport robbery.
Code 6 (2023) explores the darker implications of big data, corporate power, and digital surveillance. He also wrote Leapholes (2006), a novel for younger readers that introduces legal principles through an adventurous fictional narrative.
His continuing involvement in legal practice has helped distinguish his work from thrillers based entirely on courtroom conventions. Grippando has served as counsel at Boies Schiller Flexner, specialising in intellectual property and competition law, and has taught law and literature at the University of Miami School of Law.
Across more than three decades as a novelist, Grippando has developed a distinctive approach to legal suspense. His stories examine not only whether defendants are guilty or innocent, but also how evidence, wealth, prejudice, and political influence shape the administration of justice.
Through Jack Swyteck and his standalone protagonists, Grippando portrays the law as an imperfect but essential institution, where professional integrity and personal courage can make the difference between justice and irreversible harm.
