About Hannah Hall

The Hannah Hall series by American novelist Laura Dave is a suspenseful exploration of marriage, deception, family loyalty, and the lengths people will go to protect those they love. Centred on a woman whose seemingly happy marriage collapses when her husband mysteriously disappears, the novels combine psychological suspense with an emotionally layered story about trust, sacrifice, and the meaning of family.

The series begins with The Last Thing He Told Me (2021), introducing Hannah Hall, a woodturner living in Sausalito, California, with her husband, Owen Michaels, and his sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Hannah’s marriage is relatively new, and her relationship with Bailey remains strained. Despite her efforts to establish a connection with her stepdaughter, Bailey has been reluctant to accept her father’s new wife.

Their already complicated family dynamics change overnight when Owen disappears without warning. Before vanishing, he leaves Hannah a brief message instructing her to protect Bailey. As news emerges of a financial scandal involving the technology company where Owen works, Hannah begins to suspect that his disappearance involves something far more serious than professional misconduct.

Determined to discover what happened, Hannah joins forces with Bailey to investigate Owen’s concealed past. Their search takes them beyond California and reveals that the man they both love has been hiding significant aspects of his identity. What initially appears to be a missing-person mystery gradually develops into a story about dangerous secrets, divided loyalties, and the consequences of decisions made years earlier.

One of the novel’s defining strengths is the evolving relationship between Hannah and Bailey. Initially connected only through Owen, the two must learn to depend on one another despite their differences. Hannah’s determination to protect Bailey becomes increasingly important as the investigation exposes the risks surrounding Owen’s disappearance. Their developing bond gives the suspense an emotional foundation that extends beyond uncovering the central mystery.

Dave returned to these characters in The First Time I Saw Him (2026), set five years after Owen’s disappearance. Hannah and Bailey have established a new life in Southern California, developing a closer relationship while maintaining ties with Bailey’s grandfather, Nicholas. Although they have adapted to Owen’s absence, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance continue to influence their lives.

Their fragile stability is disrupted when Owen unexpectedly appears at an exhibition featuring Hannah’s work. His reappearance signals that the dangers connected to his past have not disappeared. Hannah and Bailey are once again forced to confront threats that place their safety at risk, drawing them into a desperate effort to escape people determined to find them.

Where the first novel centres on discovering the truth about Owen, the sequel explores what happens when that truth remains dangerous even after it has been uncovered. Questions of forgiveness, reconciliation, and second chances become increasingly significant, particularly as Hannah considers whether rebuilding her family is possible after years of separation and uncertainty.

The two novels also differ in their treatment of suspense. The Last Thing He Told Me relies heavily on gradual revelations, family secrets, and Hannah’s investigation into her husband’s identity. The First Time I Saw Him introduces a more immediate sense of danger, with Hannah and Bailey confronting active threats rather than simply investigating events that have already occurred.

Laura Dave’s approach distinguishes the Hannah Hall series from conventional crime thrillers. Although criminal activities and concealed identities drive much of the narrative, the emotional consequences of those circumstances remain equally important. Hannah is not a professional investigator but an ordinary woman forced to make extraordinary decisions under pressure. Her determination, resourcefulness, and willingness to sacrifice her own happiness emerge from her commitment to Bailey.

The success of The Last Thing He Told Me also brought the story to television through an Apple TV+ adaptation starring Jennifer Garner as Hannah and Angourie Rice as Bailey. Dave co-created the series with her husband, screenwriter Josh Singer, with the second season drawing from The First Time I Saw Him.

At its heart, the Hannah Hall series examines how family relationships can survive deception, separation, and circumstances beyond anyone’s control. Its central mystery provides the momentum, but Hannah’s changing understanding of love, responsibility, and trust gives the novels their lasting emotional significance.
