Irene Hannon’s Code of Honor series is a three-book Christian romantic-suspense sequence centered on childhood friends Colin Donovan, Kristin Dane, and Rick Jordan. The trio formed a strong bond during difficult periods in their youth and maintained that friendship into adulthood, even as their careers took them in very different directions. Each novel places one member of the group at the center of a dangerous investigation and a developing romance, while the other two remain part of the continuing story. The trilogy consists of Dangerous Illusions, Hidden Peril, and Dark Ambitions.
Dangerous Illusions begins with Trish Bailey, a woman already under considerable strain after losing her husband and caring for her seriously ill mother. When another death occurs under circumstances that raise troubling questions, Detective Colin Flynn becomes involved. Evidence initially seems to point in an uncomfortable direction, but Colin is not satisfied that the obvious explanation accounts for everything.
The investigation develops into a story involving manipulation, deception, and a criminal scheme far larger than Trish realizes. Colin’s position creates a difficult balance: he is attracted to her, but his responsibility as a detective requires him to follow evidence rather than instinct. Hannon uses that tension to establish the series’ recurring concern with trust—particularly what happens when appearances are convincing but wrong.
Hidden Peril moves the focus to Kristin Dane, who runs a fair-trade shop and has dedicated part of her life to humanitarian causes. When a colleague is murdered and suspicious activity connected with her business emerges, Kristin finds herself involved in a federal investigation. FBI Special Agent Luke Carter takes the lead in pursuing a case that expands beyond a single killing.
The story moves into international crime and terrorism, with apparently ordinary commercial transactions concealing much more dangerous activity. Kristin’s humanitarian interests give the case a personal dimension, while Luke must determine how the people responsible are exploiting legitimate organizations and unsuspecting individuals. Their relationship develops while both understand that the threat may extend well beyond the immediate crime scene.
Dark Ambitions completes the trilogy with former Army Night Stalker Rick Jordan. Rick is approached by an old military acquaintance who believes someone is following him. When the man subsequently disappears, Rick turns to Phoenix Inc., the private-investigation agency introduced in Hannon’s earlier Private Justice series.
Private investigator Heather Shields takes the case, creating a notable connection between the two series. What begins as a missing-person investigation gradually exposes secrets involving people with reputations and ambitions worth protecting. Rick and Heather must determine whether his friend disappeared voluntarily or encountered someone willing to kill to prevent the past from becoming public.
The three protagonists’ friendship gives Code of Honor its strongest continuity. Colin, Kristin, and Rick refer to themselves as the “Treehouse Gang,” a name rooted in the refuge their friendship provided when they were younger. Their adult careers differ—police work, humanitarian enterprise, and military service—but the loyalty established during childhood remains intact. When one faces danger, the others do not simply disappear until their own novels begin.
Hannon also uses the trilogy to connect different corners of her romantic-suspense world. Law enforcement, the FBI, military experience, and private investigation all become part of the series, with Dark Ambitions providing the clearest crossover through Phoenix Inc.
Publication order is the natural reading order. Each mystery and romance reaches its own conclusion, but the friendships and appearances by earlier characters give the trilogy cumulative development.
