About Edgar Cantero
Edgar Cantero is a Barcelona-born novelist, cartoonist, and screenwriter whose fiction moves freely between horror, mystery, crime, comedy, and the more unruly corners of popular culture. Born in 1981, he has written in Catalan, Spanish, and English, building a bibliography that is striking not only for its range of genres but also for the way he shifts between literary traditions. His novels tend to be energetic and visually driven, with sharp humor, eccentric characters, and an obvious affection for genre conventions even when he is busy dismantling them.
Cantero began writing competitively while still young, producing short fiction in Catalan before publishing his debut novel, Dormir amb Winona Ryder, in 2007. The book won the Joan Crexells Prize, establishing him within contemporary Catalan literature. His early career also included work for the long-running Spanish satirical magazine El Jueves, where he contributed as a writer and cartoonist. That combination of prose and comics is useful context for his later fiction: scenes often have a cinematic immediacy, while jokes, action, and sudden tonal changes arrive with the precision of visual storytelling.
His second Catalan novel, Vallvi, appeared in 2011, but Cantero subsequently made an unusual linguistic and professional turn by writing directly in English. The Supernatural Enhancements, published in 2014, was his first English-language novel. Built around an inherited mansion, strange occurrences, puzzles, documents, and competing explanations for what is happening, it demonstrated his interest in treating familiar gothic material as something playful and structurally inventive rather than simply frightening.
That approach reached a much wider readership with Meddling Kids in 2017. The novel takes the basic image of a group of youthful amateur detectives and asks what might happen when those former childhood adventurers grow up carrying psychological scars from their final case. Cantero mixes horror, comedy, mystery, and nostalgia while deliberately invoking the traditions of Saturday-morning mystery cartoons and cosmic horror. The book became a New York Times bestseller and remains his best-known work in English.
He changed direction again with This Body’s Not Big Enough for Both of Us in 2018. Rather than revisiting the atmosphere of Meddling Kids, Cantero turned toward hard-boiled detective fiction and exaggerated action, centering the story on A.Z. Kimrean, an investigator whose unusual identity forms the novel’s central conceit. The differences among these English-language books illustrate why Cantero is difficult to categorize neatly. He repeatedly borrows recognizable genre frameworks, but each novel becomes a separate experiment rather than another installment of the same formula.
Cantero later returned prominently to Catalan fiction with Ràdio Free Camaco in 2024. The novel introduced the Cegador de Verri, an unconventional investigator operating within a crime story shaped by contemporary Catalonia, dark humor, social observation, and touches of the fantastic. Gangsta Major followed in 2025, turning the character into Cantero’s first continuing novel series, with Canyardo announced as its third installment for 2026.
Across these different phases, Cantero’s most consistent trait is his refusal to treat genre boundaries as fixed. Horror may become comedy, detective fiction may veer into absurdity, and familiar pop-cultural ideas are frequently reconstructed from unexpected angles. His bibliography is therefore less a progression toward one signature formula than a collection of deliberately different stories connected by speed, irreverence, imaginative excess, and a storyteller’s fascination with what genre fiction can do when its rules are treated as invitations rather than restrictions.
