About Dragonlance Chronicles

Dragonlance is one of fantasy’s largest shared-world sagas, but its literary core is inseparable from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Developed in conjunction with the Dungeons & Dragons game line at TSR during the 1980s, the setting of Krynn became home to hundreds of novels by numerous authors. Weis and Hickman wrote the books that established its central characters and major historical conflicts, beginning with Dragons of Autumn Twilight in 1984. Their novels provide the clearest narrative backbone through an otherwise enormous and sometimes intimidating bibliography.

The original Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy follows the companions who become the Heroes of the Lance during the War of the Lance. Tanis Half-Elven, Sturm Brightblade, Caramon and Raistlin Majere, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, Flint Fireforge, Goldmoon, Riverwind, Laurana, and their allies are drawn into a conflict involving returning dragons, the armies of the Dragon Highlords, and Takhisis, the Queen of Darkness. Krynn is emerging from centuries of religious and political upheaval, and the return of both divine power and dragons transforms what begins as a reunion among old friends into a struggle affecting the entire continent of Ansalon.

The trilogy establishes many of Dragonlance’s enduring qualities: fellowship under pressure, conflicting loyalties, sacrifice, the tension between good and evil, and characters whose flaws matter as much as their heroic abilities. Raistlin in particular became central to what followed. His fraught relationship with his physically powerful twin Caramon provides much of the emotional foundation for Dragonlance Legends, the second major Weis-Hickman trilogy. Legends turns toward time travel, ambition, destiny, and Raistlin’s attempt to challenge powers far beyond those faced in the original war.

From there, the chronology becomes considerably broader. Weis and Hickman returned to major characters and turning points in books such as The Second Generation, Dragons of Summer Flame, and the War of Souls trilogy, moving Krynn through generational change and major alterations to its relationship with gods and magic. The Lost Chronicles later revisited gaps within the original War of the Lance, telling adventures that occur during periods passed over by the first trilogy rather than simply advancing the timeline.

Dragonlance also extends far beyond books written by Weis and Hickman. Other authors developed different eras, regions, races, heroes, villains, and historical events within Krynn. Separate sequences explore figures such as Huma Dragonsbane, the Knights of Solamnia, dwarven kingdoms, elven nations, minotaurs, magic-users, and characters who appeared only briefly in the central novels. This shared-world structure explains why Dragonlance catalogs can become exceptionally large and why not every book belongs to one uninterrupted reading sequence.

Weis and Hickman returned again with the Dragonlance Destinies trilogy, beginning with Dragons of Deceit. Destina Rosethorn’s attempt to change the past brings her into contact with familiar characters and periods of Krynn’s history, using time travel to revisit events and legends established decades earlier. In August 2026, the collaborators began another trilogy with War Wizard, shifting attention far back in Krynn’s history to Magius and his friendship with the legendary knight Huma.

The most useful way to understand Dragonlance is therefore as a world containing several interconnected series rather than one enormously long sequence. The Weis-Hickman novels form its central spine, particularly Chronicles and Legends, while later trilogies revisit, extend, or reinterpret pivotal eras. Around that spine lies a vast shared mythology created by many writers, giving Krynn a history far larger than any single group of heroes.
