Alisha Klapheke’s Yew Queen trilogy is a contemporary paranormal fantasy romance built around a small-town baker whose ordinary life outside Nashville is disrupted by the sudden appearance of a castle filled with cursed immortals. Originally published under Klapheke’s Eve A. Hunt pen name, the series consists of Fae Curse, Fae World, and Fae Spell and has subsequently appeared in editions credited to Alisha Klapheke. The trilogy combines Fae mythology, vampires, shapeshifters, portal fantasy, magical bloodlines, fated romance, and an increasingly unruly supernatural conflict, all delivered with a deliberately humorous modern voice.
The opening novel, Fae Curse, begins when a mysterious castle materializes on a ley line near the heroine’s Tennessee community. Its inhabitants include Fae lords and other immortals trapped by an ancient curse: leaving the castle causes them to turn to ash. The situation becomes considerably more complicated when the heroine discovers that her blood and aura may be connected to breaking that imprisonment. Lucus, the powerful Fae lord at the center of the castle’s hierarchy, initially approaches her because of what she might provide, creating a relationship founded on suspicion, supernatural attraction, and conflicting interests rather than immediate trust.
The series quickly moves beyond the initial question of freeing the immortals. The heroine discovers that she possesses magical abilities of her own, transforming her from an outsider caught in someone else’s curse into an active participant in the supernatural world. That transition is central to the trilogy. Magic is physically dangerous as well as empowering, and learning to control it becomes inseparable from understanding where she belongs and why she has become important to forces she did not previously know existed.
Fae World broadens the setting through portal fantasy. Seeking help with her unstable abilities, the heroine travels with her best friend and Lucus into a hidden British Fae kingdom, only to find that mages there are subjected to a very different form of captivity. Meanwhile, Lucus and the other cursed immortals remain vulnerable away from their castle. The shift gives the middle book a more expansive political dimension, introducing another society with its own rules surrounding magic while placing greater pressure on the central relationship.
By Fae Spell, the consequences of breaking one curse have produced another problem rather than restoring normality. A dangerous magical manifestation, a dragon appearing in town, hostility from frightened humans, and the continuing legacy of the Mage Duke’s spell bring the supernatural conflict directly into the heroine’s home community. The final book therefore closes the distance between the magical and mundane worlds that existed at the beginning of the trilogy.
Despite the vampires, dragons, curses, and magical battles, Yew Queen is noticeably lighter in temperament than grim paranormal fantasy. Klapheke uses contemporary dialogue, bakery humor, friendship, romantic tension, and the heroine’s irreverent reactions to increasingly bizarre circumstances to keep the story playful even when the stakes rise.
The three novels form one continuous arc rather than separate romances featuring different couples. The heroine’s developing magic, her bond with Lucus, the fate of the cursed immortals, and the larger supernatural conflict all carry directly from one installment into the next. A collected Yew Queen Trilogy edition is also available, reflecting how closely the books function as one extended paranormal-romance story.
