About Jack Slater

Jack Slater is a thriller writer best known for creating former CIA covert operative Jason Trapp, the protagonist of a fast-moving espionage series built around international conspiracies, intelligence operations, political violence, terrorism, and threats to American national security. Slater had worked as a writer for years before striking out independently with the Trapp novels, and he has a background in International Relations—an influence that fits naturally with fiction concerned with governments, intelligence agencies, geopolitical rivalries, and covert action.

His career as a thriller novelist began in 2019 with the book originally introduced as Deep State, following Jason Trapp after his career as a covert operative. The novel is now published as Dark State and serves as the opening installment of the Jason Trapp Thrillers. Slater quickly expanded the series, establishing the prolific release pattern that became characteristic of his work.

Trapp, whose operational codename is “Hangman,” is a former CIA operative repeatedly pulled into crises that demand the skills he acquired during his secret career. The series combines espionage with the pace of an action thriller, moving through assassinations, terrorist plots, intelligence betrayals, military confrontations, and conspiracies whose consequences extend beyond a single mission. Slater’s extensive travel has also provided inspiration for settings and characters, helping the books move naturally across international locations rather than remaining confined to Washington intelligence circles.

Although Jason Trapp supplies a continuing protagonist and recurring history, Slater deliberately structures the individual thrillers so that their principal conflicts can stand on their own. His official series description notes that the espionage novels can be read independently without requiring the preceding books, although Trapp’s accumulated experiences and relationships give readers following the sequence additional continuity. By 2026, the main series had reached its twelfth numbered installment, Patient Zero.

Slater has since expanded beyond Trapp with two other major fictional leads. His Gideon Ryker books move further into high-intensity action-thriller territory, centering on an enigmatic protagonist confronting seemingly impossible situations. The series had reached three published novels by 2026, with another installment in development.

The Blake Larsen series shows another side of his crime writing. Rather than concentrating primarily on international espionage and covert operations, these books are positioned as crime thrillers, giving Slater a separate vehicle for darker investigations and criminal suspense. Four Blake Larsen novels were available by 2026, making it another established branch of his growing bibliography.

Slater describes his fiction as fast-paced, twist-driven, gritty, and gripping, and that emphasis is consistent across the different series. Complex plots and escalating danger matter more than leisurely investigation, while protagonists tend to be capable figures pushed into situations where conventional institutions cannot solve the problem quickly enough. Outside writing, Slater has mentioned interests including travel, hiking, and skiing, but he keeps most personal biographical information private.

This Jack Slater should not be confused with the British crime writer of the same name who created Detective Sergeant Peter Gayle. The Jason Trapp author explicitly states that he did not write the DS Peter Gayle series. His own bibliography is centered instead on Jason Trapp, Gideon Ryker, and Blake Larsen, spanning espionage, action thrillers, and contemporary crime fiction.
