About Richard A. Knaak

Richard A. Knaak is an American fantasy author whose career spans original epic fantasy, licensed-world fiction, urban fantasy, game-related storytelling, manga, and comics. He is particularly associated with Dragonlance, Warcraft, Diablo, and his own Dragonrealm universe, and has reached both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Rather than becoming identified with a single fictional world, Knaak has spent much of his career moving between established settings with complex lore and fantasy worlds of his own creation.

Knaak studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before turning professionally toward writing. His breakthrough connection with Dragonlance produced The Legend of Huma in 1988, a novel set long before the original Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It expanded the history of the legendary Knight of Solamnia Huma Dragonbane and introduced Kaz the Minotaur, a character Knaak would revisit. The novel became a New York Times paperback bestseller and established Knaak as an important contributor to the expanding Dragonlance setting.

His Dragonlance work developed a distinctive corner of Krynn centered heavily on minotaurs, ancient heroes, and conflicts outside the original Companions’ story. Kaz the Minotaur continued material introduced through Huma, while Knaak later wrote the Minotaur Wars trilogy and Ogre Titans trilogy. These books allowed him to explore cultures that conventional fantasy often treated principally as monsters, particularly the politically and militarily complex minotaur civilization.

Alongside licensed fiction, Knaak created Dragonrealm, the original fantasy setting that became one of the principal foundations of his bibliography. Beginning with Firedrake, the series develops a world shaped by Dragon Kings, human kingdoms, sorcerers, and recurring figures such as Cabe Bedlam, the Gryphon, Darkhorse, and the mysterious Shade. The setting eventually expanded through main novels, prequels, shorter fiction, and later sequences, giving Knaak a long-running universe entirely separate from the franchises for which he is also known.

Knaak reached another large readership through Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft and Diablo worlds. His Warcraft fiction includes Day of the Dragon, the War of the Ancients trilogy, Night of the Dragon, Stormrage, Wolfheart, and Dawn of the Aspects. He also scripted Warcraft manga, notably the Sunwell Trilogy. His Diablo work includes Legacy of Blood, The Kingdom of Shadow, Moon of the Spider, and the Sin War trilogy, which examines events deep in Sanctuary’s history and the conflict surrounding humanity’s supernatural origins.

His bibliography extends into other established universes as well, including Age of Conan, while his independent projects show considerable genre range. The Black City Saint novels, beginning with Black City Saint, combine historical urban fantasy with Prohibition-era Chicago, supernatural mythology, and a guardian caught between the human world and Feirie. Later work such as Rex Draconis demonstrates his continuing interest in dragons and large-scale fantasy beyond Dragonrealm.

Knaak’s work is best understood by separating his original settings from his contributions to shared universes. Dragonrealm and Black City Saint show his independent world-building, while Dragonlance, Warcraft, Diablo, and Conan demonstrate his ability to develop characters and histories inside established mythologies. Across both sides of his career, dragons, ancient conflicts, unusual cultures, powerful magic, and characters caught inside much older struggles recur frequently, giving an extensive and varied bibliography a recognizable fantasy identity.
