About Joseph Finder

Joseph Finder is an American novelist best known for corporate and political thrillers in which ordinary professional pressures escalate into blackmail, espionage, conspiracy, kidnapping, and murder. His fiction frequently explores the hidden vulnerabilities of corporations and powerful institutions, particularly the ways confidential information, money, technology, and personal ambition can be weaponized. He is the creator of the Nick Heller series and the author of stand-alone thrillers including Paranoia, Company Man, Killer Instinct, Power Play, Buried Secrets, The Fixer, The Switch, Judgment, and House on Fire.

Born in Chicago in 1958, Finder spent parts of his childhood living abroad, including in Afghanistan and the Philippines, before his family returned to the United States. He studied Russian at Yale University and later earned a master’s degree from the Harvard Russian Research Center. His academic interests initially pointed toward a career involving Soviet affairs, intelligence, and international politics rather than commercial fiction.

Finder’s first published book was nonfiction. Red Carpet: The Connection Between the Kremlin and America’s Most Powerful Businessmen examined relationships between prominent American business figures and the Soviet Union. That background in Russian studies and Cold War politics carried into his early novels, particularly The Moscow Club and Extraordinary Powers, both of which draw heavily on intelligence agencies, political intrigue, and international conspiracy.

His fiction subsequently moved toward the corporate thriller, a field with which he became particularly associated. Paranoia follows a young employee drawn into corporate espionage between technology companies and became one of Finder’s best-known novels. It was later adapted into a feature film starring Liam Hemsworth, Gary Oldman, Harrison Ford, and Amber Heard.

Company Man, Killer Instinct, and Power Play continued his exploration of workplaces where career ambition and executive politics become genuinely dangerous. Finder is particularly interested in environments that initially seem familiar—an office, executive retreat, business meeting, or corporate hierarchy—and then revealing how little security professional status actually provides when powerful people have something to hide.

He introduced private intelligence specialist Nick Heller in Vanished. Heller is a former Special Forces operative who works on sensitive problems involving wealthy individuals, corporations, and families. Unlike a conventional police detective, he operates in a world where clients often want problems solved discreetly and where legal, financial, and reputational consequences can be as important as criminal ones. Heller returned in novels including Buried Secrets, Guilty Minds, and House on Fire, as well as shorter fiction.

Finder has continued writing stand-alone novels alongside the Heller books. The Fixer begins with a discovery inside an old family home, while The Switch turns an accidental exchange of laptops into a high-stakes confrontation involving government secrets. Judgment places a judge in danger after a personal decision leaves her vulnerable to blackmail. His later thrillers have continued to examine how quickly apparently successful lives can collapse when private information falls into the wrong hands.

His work has received major recognition within the thriller field. Killer Instinct won the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Novel, while Buried Secrets won the Strand Critics Award for Best Novel. Finder has also served as an advocate for thriller and crime writing through professional organizations and public appearances.

Across his career, Finder has developed a distinctive form of suspense rooted in institutions rather than distant adventure. His characters often begin inside recognizable worlds of employment, family, finance, law, or corporate power. The threat emerges when they discover that the systems providing their security can also be used against them—and that knowing the wrong secret may be far more dangerous than having committed the crime.
