About Dark-Hunter: Deadman’s Cross Trilogy

The Dark-Hunter: Deadman’s Cross Trilogy is a historical fantasy and paranormal adventure series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, combining the supernatural mythology of her Dark-Hunter universe with the dangerous world of eighteenth-century piracy. Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, the trilogy follows a crew of cursed warriors and resurrected outlaws who must defend humanity against ancient demonic forces. With its haunted ships, powerful immortals, complicated loyalties, and supernatural battles, the series offers a distinctive maritime expansion of Kenyon’s interconnected fictional world.

The central character is Devyl Bane, an ancient warlord whose brutal history has earned him a fearsome reputation. Betrayed and murdered by his own people, Bane returns to the mortal world with a personal desire for vengeance. His circumstances bring him into an uneasy alliance with Thorn, an immortal Hellchaser responsible for containing some of the most dangerous supernatural creatures ever unleashed upon humanity.

Thorn faces a problem that his usual methods cannot solve. Although his forces can combat demons operating on land, supernatural predators threatening sailors and travellers across the oceans remain beyond his effective reach. He therefore turns to Bane, whose experience, ruthlessness, and intimate knowledge of ancient evils make him an unlikely but potentially valuable ally.

Their arrangement places Bane in command of a formidable crew aboard the Sea Witch, a vessel with supernatural properties and a complicated history. The ship itself is connected to Marcelina, a woman whose ancient relationship with Bane involves betrayal, warfare, and unresolved grievances. Their shared past introduces emotional tension into an already dangerous mission.

The opening novel, Deadmen Walking (2017), establishes the trilogy’s unusual combination of pirate adventure and supernatural warfare. Bane and his crew are tasked with preventing monstrous forces from escaping their imprisonment and spreading destruction across the mortal world. Their enemies include beings associated with ancient conflicts between powerful gods, making the struggle considerably more dangerous than ordinary battles between rival pirate crews.

The supernatural threat extends beyond individual demons. Ancient agreements once confined some of the most destructive creatures in existence, but those protections are weakening. The possibility of the Southern Gate opening, releasing immense darkness into the world, creates an overarching danger that connects the trilogy’s adventures.

In Death Doesn’t Bargain (2018), the conflict becomes increasingly personal. The demon Vine seeks revenge against the Deadmen, and Kalder Dupree, a member of the crew who sacrificed himself to protect others, falls into her hands. Cameron Jack, a determined Hellchaser, refuses to abandon him despite the extraordinary risks involved. Their story brings questions of compassion, loyalty, and redemption to the forefront while expanding the supernatural conflicts established in the first novel.

The concluding instalment, At Death’s Door (2019), shifts attention toward Valynda Moore, a woman whose betrayal and death have left her trapped within a terrible curse. Her experiences add another perspective to the trilogy’s recurring examination of vengeance, suffering, and the possibility of escaping a seemingly hopeless fate.

Although each novel gives particular characters and relationships greater prominence, the Deadmen remain connected by their shared mission. They are not conventional heroes. Many have committed terrible acts, endured betrayal, or pursued revenge without regard for the consequences. Their struggle against demonic enemies becomes an opportunity to confront their own histories and determine whether their past actions must define their futures.

The trilogy’s connection to the wider Dark-Hunter universe is especially significant through Thorn and the Hellchasers, supernatural warriors responsible for confronting threats that ordinary humans cannot survive. Familiar mythological concepts appear alongside new characters and maritime settings, allowing the books to expand Kenyon’s supernatural mythology without depending entirely on the central Dark-Hunter cast.

Kenyon also incorporates her characteristic mixture of sharp dialogue, dangerous romantic relationships, and morally complicated protagonists. The historical setting introduces naval conflict, pirate rivalries, and the constant uncertainty of life at sea, while supernatural elements transform these dangers into conflicts with potentially catastrophic consequences.

The three novels were subsequently collected in Deadman’s Cross (2024), an omnibus edition bringing the trilogy together.

What makes Deadman’s Cross distinctive is its combination of swashbuckling adventure and Kenyon’s darker mythology. Beneath the supernatural battles and pirate legends lies a continuing examination of betrayal, responsibility, and redemption. Its cursed warriors may have been condemned by their histories, but their choices offer the possibility of becoming something greater than the monsters they were once believed to be.
