About Lux
Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Lux series is a young adult science-fiction romance built around aliens, secrecy, government control, forbidden attraction, and a heroine whose ordinary life changes the moment she moves next door to the wrong boy. The series begins with Obsidian and follows Katy Swartz, a book-loving teenager who relocates to West Virginia with her mother after her father’s death. What first looks like a fresh start becomes something far stranger when Katy meets Dee Black and her infuriating twin brother, Daemon.
Katy is one of the reasons the series became so beloved among readers of paranormal and science-fiction romance. She is not introduced as a warrior, chosen ruler, or trained fighter. She is a girl who loves books, blogs about reading, and wants a quieter life after grief has disrupted her family. That grounded beginning makes the supernatural reveal more effective. Katy’s world does not explode because she goes looking for danger; it happens because the people next door are Luxen, alien beings made of light, and their presence attracts enemies, suspicion, and government attention.
Daemon Black gives the series much of its early spark. He is arrogant, protective, rude, magnetic, and determined to keep Katy away from his sister because humans are dangerous to Luxen secrecy. His hostility toward Katy creates the series’ central romantic tension, but Armentrout gradually complicates him beyond the surface attitude. Daemon’s protectiveness comes from loss, fear, and the constant threat of exposure. His relationship with Katy becomes compelling because it moves from irritation and distrust into loyalty, vulnerability, and a bond that neither of them can treat casually.
The Luxen mythology gives the books their science-fiction structure. The Luxen are not alone on Earth; their enemies, the Arum, are also present, and the Department of Defense keeps a dangerous watch over alien activity. As the series develops through Onyx, Opal, Origin, and Opposition, the conflict widens from neighborhood secrecy into experiments, hybrids, hidden facilities, invasion threats, and the consequences of trying to control beings who are far more powerful than humans understand. Armentrout keeps the romance central, but the larger plot grows steadily darker and more political.
Dee Black is also essential to the series’ emotional foundation. Her friendship with Katy is the reason Katy becomes involved with the Black family in the first place, and it gives the books more heart than a simple alien-boy romance would have. Dee’s warmth, loneliness, and desire for a normal friendship show the cost of living in hiding. The Luxen may have power, but they also live with grief, rules, and the fear that loving humans can lead to disaster.
The series includes important companion works. Shadows tells Dawson Black and Bethany Williams’s story before the events of Obsidian, giving context to the tragedy that shapes Daemon and Dee’s behavior. Oblivion retells parts of the main story from Daemon’s point of view, which is especially appealing for readers who want his side of the early Katy-and-Daemon tension. Obsession is an adult companion novel set in the same world, while the later Origin series continues the universe through Luc and Evie Dasher.
Lux works because it combines romance, alien suspense, humor, and emotional escalation in a highly readable way. Its strongest pull is watching Katy move from outsider to someone deeply tied to a dangerous hidden world, without losing the stubbornness, curiosity, and bookish identity that made her stand out from the beginning.
