About James Rollins

James Rollins is the pen name of American author James Paul Czajkowski, a bestselling writer of historical, scientific, and archaeological thrillers whose work is built around the collision between buried history and cutting-edge danger. He is best known for the Sigma Force series, a long-running sequence featuring a covert team of soldier-scientists drawn into global crises involving ancient mysteries, modern technology, secret societies, biological threats, and political power. His official biography identifies him as a number-one New York Times bestselling author whose books have been translated into more than forty languages and have sold more than twenty million copies worldwide.

Before becoming a full-time novelist, Rollins trained and worked as a veterinarian. He practiced in Sacramento for more than a decade, and that scientific background is central to the texture of his fiction. His books often begin with a startling premise drawn from biology, geology, archaeology, medicine, physics, or evolutionary history, then push that idea into the high-speed machinery of the international thriller. The result is a style that combines laboratory curiosity with cinematic pacing: a lost artifact, a remote expedition, or an old legend usually matters because it can still change the present.

Rollins’s early individual adventure novels, including Subterranean, Excavation, Deep Fathom, and Ice Hunt, established his appetite for extreme locations and hidden worlds. Caves, ruins, polar landscapes, ocean depths, and archaeological sites become places where the known map breaks open. These standalones helped define his brand before Sigma Force became the spine of his bibliography. They also show why his thrillers are often compared to adventure fiction as much as espionage: discovery is as important as pursuit.

The Sigma Force series began with Sandstorm and developed through books such as Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Doomsday Key, The 6th Extinction, The Demon Crown, Tides of Fire, and Arkangel. At the center is Commander Gray Pierce and the elite scientific-military agency known as Sigma Force, supported by recurring figures such as Painter Crowe, Seichan, Monk Kokkalis, and others whose personal loyalties deepen the continuing story. The books are designed around large-scale threats, but their strongest continuity comes from the team’s shifting relationships, moral compromises, and repeated encounters with knowledge that is both wondrous and dangerous.

Rollins has also expanded beyond Sigma Force in several directions. The Tucker Wayne books focus on a former Army Ranger and his military working dog, Kane, bringing a more tactical and emotionally direct strand into his thriller world. With Rebecca Cantrell, he co-wrote the Order of the Sanguines series, which mixes religious history, supernatural suspense, and secret Vatican-linked mythology. His Jake Ransom books move into middle-grade adventure, while the Moonfall Saga, beginning with The Starless Crown, marks a major return to epic fantasy under the Rollins name.

His fantasy career also predates Moonfall. Under the name James Clemens, he wrote The Banned and the Banished and the Godslayer Chronicles, works that belong to a separate part of his bibliography and show a stronger secondary-world fantasy identity. That division of names is useful: James Rollins primarily signals thrillers and adventure science, while James Clemens points readers toward fantasy.

Across his many series and standalones, Rollins is best understood as a writer of perilous discovery. His novels repeatedly ask what happens when the past is not safely dead, when science uncovers more than it can control, and when knowledge becomes valuable enough to kill for.
