About Colburn Brothers

The Colburn brothers have spent much of their lives looking out for one another, but protecting their own hearts proves considerably more difficult. In Jill Shalvis’s Colburn Brothers trilogy, three men with complicated histories discover that love has a way of disrupting even their most carefully maintained defenses. Set in the fictional coastal town of Star Falls in Sonoma County, California, the series combines contemporary romance, family drama, sharp humour, and the emotional complications of finding a place to belong.

Published between August 2025 and July 2026, the trilogy follows Ryder, Caleb, and Tucker Colburn, whose shared childhood experiences have created an unusually strong bond. Their loyalty is unquestionable, although their different personalities and approaches to relationships frequently lead to arguments, teasing, and well-intentioned interference.

The Sonoma Coast provides a distinctive backdrop, with its rugged shoreline, unpredictable weather, and small-town atmosphere. Shalvis uses the setting to contrast the brothers’ difficult past with the possibility of building more stable and fulfilling lives. Family connections remain important throughout, including the siblings’ relationship with their younger sister, Kiera.

The opening novel, He Falls First (2025), introduces Ryder Colburn, a talented contractor who finds working with buildings considerably easier than dealing with complicated emotions. Reserved, protective, and accustomed to taking responsibility for others, Ryder has little interest in pursuing a serious romantic relationship.

His circumstances change when he encounters Penny Rose, a determined young woman struggling to maintain her grandmother Nell’s ageing Victorian house. Penny’s responsibilities include caring for her younger half brother, Wyatt, while managing the financial and practical difficulties surrounding the property.

Ryder’s involvement in the renovation brings them into frequent contact, gradually undermining their intentions to avoid romantic complications. Their relationship develops through an unusual mixture of reluctant attraction, forced proximity, and a misunderstanding involving a supposed romantic arrangement.

Beneath the humour, both characters face questions about accepting help. Ryder has built his identity around protecting others, while Penny has become accustomed to managing problems independently. Their growing affection challenges the assumption that relying on someone else necessarily means losing control.

Free Falling (2026) shifts attention to Caleb Colburn, whose outgoing personality conceals emotional complexities of his own. Unlike his more guarded brother, Caleb approaches life with charm and humour, but his past includes a painful connection with Emma, a woman he knew during college.

Their earlier rivalry centred on a scholarship that Caleb received despite Emma’s desperate need for financial assistance. The outcome had lasting consequences for her education and circumstances, leaving resentment that neither attraction nor the passage of time has erased.

When professional responsibilities bring them together again, Emma finds herself working alongside the man she has spent years trying to forget. Their relationship develops against a background of renovation work, unresolved grievances, and the uncomfortable realisation that their assumptions about one another may have been incomplete.

The novel explores economic insecurity and the different opportunities available to people from contrasting backgrounds. Emma’s reluctance to accept assistance reflects experiences that have taught her to depend primarily on herself, while Caleb must confront how his earlier circumstances affected someone he cared about.

The concluding novel, Falling Into You (2026), follows Tucker Colburn, a firefighter whose instinct to rescue others extends into his personal relationships. His reunion with Hazel Pierce, a former close friend, forces him to confront a romantic history that neither has successfully forgotten.

Hazel returns to Star Falls intending to help her estranged father before leaving again. Her plans become complicated when an accident sends her vehicle into a river and Tucker comes to her rescue.

Their renewed proximity brings years of unresolved feelings, misunderstandings, and personal disappointments to the surface. Although Hazel hopes to keep her return temporary, Tucker’s continued affection challenges her determination to remain emotionally detached.

The trilogy’s family relationships give the individual romances greater significance. The brothers remain active in one another’s lives, and their affectionate interference creates humour alongside moments of genuine emotional support. Shalvis also incorporates a subtle continuing mystery, connecting elements of the family’s history across the three novels.

Colburn Brothers returns to the emotionally engaging small-town romance for which Shalvis is known, while placing particular emphasis on brotherhood, childhood experiences, and the difficulty of overcoming long-established emotional defenses. Each romance explores a different form of vulnerability, but all three share the recognition that protecting loved ones sometimes requires accepting their support in return.
