About Lisa Scottoline

Lisa Scottoline is an American novelist best known for legal thrillers, domestic suspense, and emotionally driven crime fiction centered on women under pressure. A former lawyer, she built her reputation with the Rosato & Associates novels, a Philadelphia-set legal series featuring an all-women law firm, then expanded into standalones, the Rosato & DiNunzio series, humorous nonfiction, historical fiction, and later psychological thrillers. Her bibliography is broad, but its strongest through-line is clear: Scottoline writes about justice as something personal, costly, and often fought for by women who have been underestimated.

Scottoline was born in Philadelphia and educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned both her undergraduate degree and law degree. She practiced law before turning seriously to fiction, and that professional background gave her early novels their courtroom structure, legal vocabulary, and interest in the gap between truth and what can be proved. Her debut, Everywhere That Mary Went, introduced Mary DiNunzio and helped establish the brisk, witty, high-stakes legal style that would define much of her early career.

The Rosato & Associates books became Scottoline’s signature series. Led by Bennie Rosato and later enriched by figures such as Mary DiNunzio, Judy Carrier, and Anne Murphy, the novels combine legal cases with office politics, friendship, danger, and Philadelphia neighborhood life. They are not dry courtroom puzzles. Scottoline uses the law as a pressure chamber, forcing characters to confront professional ethics, family loyalty, corruption, wrongful accusation, and threats that often become physically dangerous. The series’ appeal lies in that blend of legal suspense and emotional immediacy.

The later Rosato & DiNunzio series brought Bennie and Mary into a slightly different phase, with Mary taking a more central role as lawyer, daughter, wife, and investigator. These books retain the legal-thriller frame but give greater weight to family, community, and the tensions between professional duty and personal obligation. Mary’s South Philadelphia background, close family ties, and moral warmth contrast with Bennie’s tougher, more guarded leadership, making the partnership one of the most durable relationships in Scottoline’s fiction.

Scottoline’s standalones widened her audience beyond series readers. Books such as Look Again, Save Me, Come Home, Keep Quiet, Most Wanted, After Anna, Someone Knows, What Happened to the Bennetts, and The Truth About the Devlins show her recurring interest in ordinary lives overturned by accusation, disappearance, violence, secrets, or one impossible choice. These novels often begin with a domestic situation—a parent’s fear, a family lie, a marriage under strain, a child in danger—and turn it into suspense that is both legal and emotional.

She has also written beyond contemporary crime. Eternal and Loyalty moved into historical fiction, reflecting Italian and Italian American history, family bonds, anti-fascist resistance, organized crime, and moral courage across generations. Her nonfiction, much of it connected to her long-running humor columns and written with her daughter Francesca Serritella, reveals another public side of Scottoline: comic, self-deprecating, family-centered, and conversational.

Scottoline’s work endures because it combines accessibility with conviction. Her plots move quickly, but they are usually anchored in questions of loyalty, motherhood, friendship, professional integrity, and the ways women protect themselves and one another when systems fail. Whether she is writing about lawyers, families, fugitives, or historical survivors, Lisa Scottoline returns to the same dramatic force: the moment when private fear becomes public action.
