Christopher Farnsworth’s Nathaniel Cade series imagines that the most powerful office in the United States has maintained an extraordinary secret for more than a century: the president has a vampire working for him. Nathaniel Cade is bound by a blood oath to protect the country from supernatural threats that ordinary intelligence agencies cannot acknowledge, much less explain. Across three full-length novels and two shorter stories, Farnsworth combines political thriller, espionage, horror, conspiracy fiction, and monster mythology into a hidden version of American national security.
The arrangement is introduced in Blood Oath. Cade was turned into a vampire in the nineteenth century and subsequently compelled through a supernatural oath to serve the president of the United States. He has spent generations confronting creatures and conspiracies whose existence remains classified, surviving administrations while the human officials around him age and disappear.
Cade’s latest handler is Zach Barrows, an ambitious young White House employee whose career suddenly takes an unexpected direction when he is assigned to work with the vampire. Zach initially approaches Washington through politics, networking, and personal advancement. Cade belongs to a much older world governed by duty, secrecy, and threats that cannot be managed through conventional government procedure. Their uneasy partnership becomes the human center of the series.
In Blood Oath, Zach is introduced to a clandestine history in which seemingly impossible events have been concealed behind official explanations. Cade treats monsters less as supernatural curiosities than as national-security problems. His enormous physical advantages are balanced by the limitations of his condition and by an oath that restricts his freedom. He is powerful enough to terrify almost anyone he encounters, yet he remains fundamentally a servant of the presidency.
The President’s Vampire expands that hidden world when Cade and Zach investigate an ancient threat connected to a private defense contractor. Farnsworth increasingly blends supernatural horror with recognizable anxieties about military technology, privatized warfare, biological experimentation, and institutions willing to pursue dangerous advantages without understanding their consequences.
Red, White, and Blood pushes the series into the atmosphere of a presidential election. Cade confronts an old enemy known as the Boogeyman, an entity that has returned repeatedly through history and has proven extraordinarily difficult to destroy. Political campaigning creates an especially dangerous environment for Cade: the president is constantly exposed to crowds and media attention, while Cade must operate without revealing what he actually is.
Two novellas extend the series beyond the main trilogy. The Burning Men begins with an inexplicable mass killing in a movie theater, where victims are burned despite the apparent absence of any conventional explosive or ignition source. Cade and Zach investigate knowing that the event is unlikely to remain isolated.
Deep State provides another shorter Nathaniel Cade adventure and continues Farnsworth’s interest in the secret machinery operating beneath publicly visible government. Both novellas are genuine additions to the Cade storyline rather than unrelated works carrying similar themes.
The series is particularly effective because Cade is not portrayed as a romanticized vampire struggling primarily with love or immortality. He is essentially a supernatural weapon who has spent more than a century performing a job he cannot resign from. Zach, meanwhile, gives readers access to a world in which American history contains an entire classified layer of monsters, occult threats, and suppressed disasters.
As of 2026, Farnsworth’s official bibliography lists three Nathaniel Cade novels—Blood Oath, The President’s Vampire, and Red, White, and Blood—alongside the two Cade novellas, The Burning Men and Deep State.
