About Kim Harrison

Kim Harrison is an American fantasy author best known for the Hollows, the long-running urban fantasy series featuring witch-born demon Rachel Morgan and a sprawling supernatural community in an alternate Cincinnati. A #1 New York Times bestselling writer, Harrison has worked across urban fantasy, traditional fantasy, young adult fiction, science-fiction thrillers, graphic novels, and serialized speculative fiction. She also publishes traditional fantasy under the name Dawn Cook, giving her bibliography two distinct identities that developed alongside one another.

Born and raised in Michigan, Harrison grew up reading science fiction and fairy tales. Her professional publishing career actually began under the Dawn Cook name with First Truth in 2002. The novel introduced Alissa and launched the four-book Truth series, a traditional secondary-world fantasy concerned with magic, identity, and an expanding understanding of its heroine’s heritage. Cook later wrote The Decoy Princess and Princess at Sea, forming a second fantasy sequence centered on Tess, a woman raised as royalty who discovers that her identity is far more complicated than she believed.

Harrison’s career changed decisively with Dead Witch Walking in 2004. The novel introduced Rachel Morgan and the Hollows, an alternate-history world in which a genetically engineered virus has devastated the human population and allowed supernatural species to reveal their existence. Witches, vampires, werewolves, pixies, elves, and demons now inhabit the same society, with Cincinnati becoming the principal setting for Rachel’s increasingly complicated adventures.

Rachel begins as a runner for a supernatural law-enforcement agency before leaving to work independently with living vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks. Those relationships became as important to the Hollows as its magic and mysteries. Harrison allows friendships, rivalries, romances, political alliances, and enmities to change gradually across the series, while Rachel’s understanding of her own powers evolves dramatically. The books consequently operate less like isolated paranormal cases than a continuing character saga with consequences that accumulate over many installments.

The original Hollows arc appeared to conclude with The Witch with No Name, but Harrison later returned to Rachel with American Demon. Subsequent novels expanded Rachel’s role within Cincinnati’s supernatural politics and continued relationships established much earlier in the series. Absolute Demon, scheduled for 2027, is the nineteenth principal Hollows novel.

Harrison has also built several unrelated speculative worlds. The Madison Avery trilogy brings supernatural questions of death and fate into young adult fiction. The Peri Reed Chronicles follow a technologically enhanced operative whose ability to alter brief stretches of time creates problems involving memory, identity, and institutional control. The Shadow Age series, beginning with Three Kinds of Lucky, introduces Petra Grady and a system of contemporary magic in which using power generates a dangerous residue called dross.

Another project, Eclipsed Evolution, began as a three-part serialized story about first contact after a solar eclipse opens a portal between Earth and another realm. Harrison has also written Hollows short fiction and scripted original graphic novels that expand Rachel Morgan’s world beyond the main novels.

Despite the variety of genres, Harrison’s work has a consistent interest in protagonists whose abilities create complications rather than easy superiority. Magic, technology, and supernatural power are tied to responsibility, prejudice, politics, and personal consequences. The Hollows remains the defining achievement of her career, but the Dawn Cook fantasies and later speculative projects reveal a writer whose bibliography extends well beyond a single urban-fantasy universe.
