About Adriana Trigiani

Adriana Trigiani is an American bestselling novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose work celebrates family relationships, Italian American heritage, and the communities that shape people’s lives. Known for her Big Stone Gap and Valentine series, as well as historical novels such as The Shoemaker’s Wife, she combines humour, romance, and richly developed characters with an interest in cultural traditions and personal identity. Her stories frequently follow women navigating family obligations, professional ambitions, and the difficult choices involved in building independent lives.

Trigiani grew up in Big Stone Gap, a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia. Raised in an Italian American family, she developed an appreciation for storytelling, craftsmanship, food, and the traditions passed between generations. Her upbringing in Appalachia would later provide the setting for her first published novel and become a lasting influence on her fiction.

Before establishing herself as a novelist, Trigiani built a career in theatre and television. She studied drama at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana and subsequently moved to New York City, where she pursued writing and performing. Her early career included work as a television writer and producer, particularly on The Cosby Show and A Different World. These experiences strengthened her ability to develop dialogue, ensemble casts, and character-driven stories.

Her literary breakthrough came with Big Stone Gap (2000), a novel set in her Virginia hometown during the late 1970s. Its protagonist, Ave Maria Mulligan, is a thirty-five-year-old pharmacist whose carefully ordered life changes after a family revelation forces her to reconsider her identity and future. The novel’s success led to three sequels, creating a family saga rooted in Appalachian community life, friendship, and the enduring influence of ancestry.

Trigiani subsequently explored Italian American experiences through standalone novels such as Lucia, Lucia (2003), The Queen of the Big Time (2004), and Rococo (2005). These stories examine family expectations, romantic relationships, social ambition, and cultural change, often through protagonists caught between inherited traditions and personal independence.

Her Valentine trilogy, beginning with Very Valentine (2009), centres on Valentine Roncalli, a talented shoemaker working to preserve her family’s handmade shoe business in Greenwich Village. The novels reflect Trigiani’s fascination with traditional craftsmanship, family enterprises, and the challenges of maintaining cultural identity in a changing commercial world.

One of her most ambitious works, The Shoemaker’s Wife (2012), draws inspiration from her grandparents’ experiences as Italian immigrants. Spanning decades and continents, the historical novel follows Enza Ravanelli and Ciro Lazzari as they confront separation, economic hardship, war, and the uncertainties of building new lives in America.

Trigiani has continued exploring Italian heritage and family history through novels including The Good Left Undone (2022), which examines three generations of women connected by migration, sacrifice, and family secrets. The View from Lake Como (2025) returns to contemporary Italian American family life, examining marriage, independence, and the possibility of personal reinvention.

Her bibliography also includes the Viola series for young adults, featuring an aspiring teenage filmmaker adjusting to unfamiliar circumstances. In nonfiction, Don’t Sing at the Table (2010) draws upon the wisdom and experiences of her grandmothers, reflecting the importance of intergenerational knowledge throughout her writing.

Trigiani’s involvement in film extends beyond adaptations of her novels. She wrote and directed the 2014 film Big Stone Gap, starring Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg, and directed the documentary Queens of the Big Time. Her work across television, theatre, literature, and cinema reflects a consistent interest in storytelling through different creative forms.

Her achievements include appointment as a Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy in 2023, recognition as a Patron of Letters by the Library of Virginia in 2024, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2025. She also co-founded the Origin Project, a writing education initiative serving young people in Appalachia.

Trigiani’s fiction is distinguished by lively dialogue, affectionate humour, vivid settings, and emotionally complicated family relationships. Although romance often plays an important role, her stories extend beyond romantic fulfilment to examine work, friendship, heritage, and the responsibilities connecting generations.

Across her novels, Trigiani portrays identity as something shaped by both personal choices and inherited history. Her characters frequently discover that understanding where they come from is essential to deciding where they wish to go, giving her fiction a distinctive combination of cultural richness, emotional warmth, and independent spirit.
